My Juvenile Week
Making personal prayer journals on the second day.
Stuffing felt bears, called Prayer Bears, on the third day. This was the day, they also learned about giving away something to the less fortunate. They made two cuddly bears - one to give to a child in Africa and one to keep for themselves.
At this point, I have to mention that when I went around the table to ask them individually if they were ready to give up a bear, most of them readily said "OK". A couple of them said that the bears were too cute to part with but they understood why they were giving it away. They were instructed to write their names on a tag and insert it in a pocket at the back of the bear. The older children wrote personal messages. The ones that stood out for me were "To God's child with love" and "God loves you".
Decorating boot-shaped bird feeders. Notice by the fourth day, the table had too many scribbles. Put coloured markers and children ... and we get "works of art" everywhere!
Unfortunately, I did not get to take any pictures on the fifth day. It was sand art day. My team and I spent most of the time, dusting off sand from the table to get it ready before the next group walked in. We had five groups per day. They were grouped according to their ages.
This pre-school kid refused to leave his daddy when he was dropped off on the last day. His group leader tried to coax him but he kept hanging on. After I took their picture, I moved away (hoping that might help). A few minutes later, I saw his daddy leave. Yay!
It was a tiring but fun week. I love working with children. I will do this again next summer if the local church offers it.

Hi Pearly
There is something special about working with children. They are innocent and they speak the truth when they talk.
Some of those kids recognised me during off-hours. One of them pointed me out to her dad and said that I was the lady that gave her extra beads to play with.
Another one came up to me at the church one day to thank me for such a good time. So sweet. The hardwork was definitely worth it. You are right. :)
i agree with both Pearly and u, j.t. that children can be so sweet that u just forget all their "life explorations" at the end of the day esp when they give u hugs and kisses! :)
it is wonderful that the kids at the camp are learning to be giving and to give something of themselves to the less fortunate. The words of 'To God's child with love' that is so thoughtful and heart-warming.
Have a great week ahead j.t.
They are so cute and adorable to work with!
I wish i can do part time like you... aahh.... such a busy life i have!
Ah yes, children are fun to be with, aren't they? Except when they start throwing tantrums lah... ;)
Did you dress like a cowgirl too?
Hi JT, love this post. The kids are really cute. Yes, kids can turn us into kids. Sometimes the best present for a kid is a box of crayons...the best present for the mother? A picture drawn of her. While we try to teach our children all about life,
Our children teach us what life is all about.
Keep well, JT, Lee.
Hi Winnie
Yeah, that was a thoughtful and loving child. I put my arms around her and told her she did a good job. She smiled and said that if the child is afraid, the child can hug the bear. :)
Hello Angel Eyes
Someday, my dear ... you may be able to do it. You will never know what the future holds for you. :)
Hi Pi
Thank goodness I did not have to deal with any tantrums that week. The kids were pretty much excited about the activities they had going for them. I guess there could have been some cases but I did not see any by the time they arrived at my fun station. phew! :D
Me? Dressed as a cowgirl? haha
I do not own any cowgirl attire. I have are a pair of boots but knowing I was going to be on my feet for half a day, I was not going to sacrifice my comfort.
Hi Lee
The children went crazy with coloured markers and some crayons. While most wrote their names or got creative with scribbles on their little journals, there were a few of them who drew pictures of their parents and siblings. I bet their moms would have been so touched with their efforts.
You wrote: "While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about."
Touché, Lee.
You keep well too and have a good week.
Hi JT,
I'm back home in M'sia now (and blogging!!). And I just spent a week babysitting my neice! children are indeed very lovely, except when they're crying!!
children...with my 3 boys, they are the joy and the pain he he...nice posting and take care....
Children are so adorable! They are so much fun to be around with even at the end of it all if its tiring, i think its worth their love, hugs n kisses :)
j.t.
When you do something with love, love is what you get in return. The children showed it to you.
Hey Jacqui,
Lovely sharing! But I must say this: I want a tweddy bwear twoo!!! Boohoo...
The little boy in the last pic...Why should he leave his dad on the last day? On the last day, shouldn't he be going back with his dad? *Confuse*
As for kids and doodles and their scribbling, why worry? Now we have Nippon Odourless or whatever you call those thingies...Just wipe off with cloth only when they scribble...Somehow, I am not convinced ;) Must be some gimmick...
After all, it's crayon! And dont tell me 3-day crayon stain on wall, you can wipe off and make it look brand new? In that case, there'll be no stains on walls, ever!
Oh dear me, where have I terpesong?
Oh well...
Hehehe...
Hi Theodwyn
Long time to see. :) Back home, finally, huh?
Ooo... crying babies. I had a good dosage of them on the plane plus toddlers - non-stop from Frankfurt to Houston. I could see some parents were exhausted after that long flight (not forgetting other passengers who had to put up with it). :D
I doubt Business Class passengers were spared of it either. ;)
Hello Zaitgha
There are good days and trying days with children. One minute they are amusing you, next thing they are testing your patience. :)
Children are very angelic when they are asleep. :D
Thanks Zaitgha. Have a good week and happy cooking.
Hello Shalini
Welcome to my blog.
Yes, they are. Children are absolutely adorable. They can try my patience at times (haha) but they still have that innocence that makes me melt.
See you around, Shalini. Thanks for visiting. :)
Hi Zawi
awww... that was a lovely thing to say. Thank you. :)
Hey Daphne
My liddle giwl want a tweddy bwear. awww... Remind me to bring you one when I return to Malaysia next. :) Which colour would you like? Purple or green?
Re that little boy. OK, maybe I did not explain well - a thousand apologies.
That was the last day of the camp. Every morning for that one week, parents would drop off their children and leave them in the care of teachers and volunteers for half a day.
Anyway, that little guy is a daddy's boy. His mom was not well that day. Apparently, he never fussed when mom dropped him off the previous days but when his daddy did that on the last day, he did not want to stay for the camp's activities. For him, going out with dad means "fun". He could not understand that his daddy had to go to work. Thus, the fuss. :)
Nippon Odourless: Is that a new product? I believe we have something similar here. If I am not mistaken it is called Mr.Clean sponge. Apparently it takes off anything. I was told that shaving cream does a good job removing stains too. Gosh! what are the men putting on their faces? hahaha
Hi j.t.,
I can imagine the fun you had with those cherubic kids...their innocence and their spontaineity is enough to put smiles on our faces and hearts.
Have a great week, j.t.
Dearest Jac,
Ah, children! They ll brighten up my days anytime, anywhere.
Good thing you are doing Sis. Hoping to read more of this kind of posting.
Take care
awww...those kids sure had lots of fun with sand and paper. and the best way to cultivate creativity in them.
do u have fun too JT?
Hi NyonyaPenang
I enjoyed watching some of their expressions when they first walk into the room to discover the craft of the day. It was like finding a treasure. So cute.
You have a great week too, Nyonya.
Hi Elviza
This is an annual thing in summer. If I had remained in Germany, then I believe I would have sought out other regular activities in that community that centered around children.
Now that I am in a new place, I will have to see what I can do in the current community.
Thanks sis and you take care too.
Hi KC
I believe most of the kids enjoyed the sand art. Some preferred other days' crafts. I had one kid asking me, the day after making the prayer bears, if she could make one more bear. She wanted one for her little sister.
Anyway, those kids were so proud of their little creations. It was a lot of fun interacting with them. :D
Hi J.T.
I wish I had these kind of things to do when I was a kid in Malaysia. Kids are so cute at that age - innocent and adorable.
JT: Interacting and working with kids is so much fun.. especially the things they say.
They are very perceptive and so easily know who'll answer them patiently and who'll get angry.
Hi Dawn
Times have changed and kids seem to have a lot more activities planned for them these days.
Our activities were more do-it-yourself and spur-of-the-moment kind of thing back home in Malaysia. Either way, they spell F-U-N. :)
Take care, Dawn.
Hey Rashikaps
I agree that the kids are perceptive. And the things they say ... oh so cute and heart-warming. There was this one child who preferred that his bear went to a child in Iraq.
His teacher and I told him that the bears we made that day were designated for African children. But if he wants to give away the other one for a child in Iraq, he can ask him mom to send it through his father, who is working there. He agreed with the idea, smiled and carried on stuffing his bear. :)
I haven't been to your blog for ages and didnt know you changed the 'look'.
Nice! :)
Anyway, working with children is great! I love it too. Its a wonderful feeling seeing them having fun.
Hello JT, I am new to your blog. Came over by way of Uncle Lee's blog. Hope you don;t mind..:)
Thanks for sharing the pictures, the children...so cute.
Will read your previous postings...hehe.
U have a good week and great weekend ahead.
Cheers.
Hi J.T., since you like working with children especially the the very young ones shown on your picture, you should go get a job as a teacher. Ladies make better teachers than men having more patience and having an inherent ability to go down to children's way and level of thinking.Dealing with very young kids requires special talent.
Hi Trueblue
It sure has been a long time. Thanks for the compliment and for dropping by despite your busy schedule.
Hope your little girl brightens your days with more pictures of you. :)
Hello Nightwing
I don't mind at all. Welcome to my blog. Glad U.Lee's blog brought you here. ;)
By the way, thanks for listing me on your blog. I will do the same for you.
Enjoy your week and see you around.
Hi Rajahram
I have considered being a teacher for young children. To be one, I need to be qualified. With so much moving around we have done in the past 7 years, it was hard to stay in one place to complete a course. I have not given up yet. The opportunity will present itself someday.
Thanks. :)
JT darling :
how are you still busy pack out ?
please do e mail your adress to me . ok got thing for you xxxxx
Hi Pearly darling
I have slowed down on the unpacking part - taking my time there. Only unpack what I need to use.
I have emailed you my address. Thanks a million. :)
Hi JT,
It is indeed great to work with children. What Lee said is powerful, 'While we try to teach our children all about life, Our children teach us what life is all about'.
They are quick to forgive, unpretentious, laugh a lot, always going for fun, adventurous...well...what can we say about us adults? Ha ha. Anyway, great job JT.
I always love it seeing boys bonding with dad. I read somewhere that it is important as they will be balanced in adulthood. So I find the boy in the last pic so cute.
Cheers.
j.t. when you have some time, do pop by my blog, have something for you :)
have a great day!
Hello Jacqui,
What a lovely experience!
Congratulation for that and for the nice post and photos.
Take care.
Hi Ruby
Indeed, Ruby - those are powerful words.
Adults somehow lose all those qualities when they grow up due to life's lessons and experiences. But children remind us how we can live our lives ... if we want to.
The boy's name in the last pic is Nicholas. A real cutie. Watching him interact with his dad during our Rome trip and every Sunday after that, clearly showed their close bond. He has wonderful parents. I am very sure he will grow up to be a well-adjusted individual.
Hi Winnie
OK... I will be there in a minute. :)
See ya.
Hello Odele
Thank you, my dear. I am glad for that experience. Loved every minute of it.
Take care.
