Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving
(Edgar Albert Guest, 1881-1959)
Gettin' together to smile an' rejoice,
An' eatin' an' laughin' with folks of your choice;
An' kissin' the girls an' declarin' that they
Are growin more beautiful day after day;
Chattin' an' braggin' a bit with the men,
Buildin' the old family circle again;
Livin' the wholesome an' old-fashioned cheer,
Just for awhile at the end of the year.

Livin' the wholesome an' old-fashioned cheer,
Just for awhile at the end of the year.
Greetings fly fast as we crowd through the door
And under the old roof we gather once more
Just as we did when the youngsters were small;
Mother's a little bit grayer, that's all.
Father's a little bit older, but still
Ready to romp an' to laugh with a will.
Here we are back at the table again
Tellin' our stories as women an men.
And under the old roof we gather once more
Just as we did when the youngsters were small;
Mother's a little bit grayer, that's all.
Father's a little bit older, but still
Ready to romp an' to laugh with a will.
Here we are back at the table again
Tellin' our stories as women an men.

Bowed are our heads for a moment in prayer;
Oh, but we're grateful an' glad to be there.
Home from the east land an' home from the west,
Home with the folks that are dearest an' best.
Out of the sham of the cities afar
We've come for a time to be just what we are.
Here we can talk of ourselves an' be frank,
Forgettin' position an' station an' rank.
Give me the end of the year an' its fun
When most of the plannin' an' toilin' is done;
Bring all the wanderers home to the nest,
Let me sit down with the ones I love best,
Hear the old voices still ringin' with song,
See the old faces unblemished by wrong,
See the old table with all of its chairs
An' I'll put soul in my Thanksgivin' prayers.

In the United States, Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day is an annual one-day holiday to give thanks for the things one has at the end of the harvest season. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November; the period from Thanksgiving Day to New Year's Day is often collectively referred to as the "holiday season", and the holiday itself is often nicknamed Turkey Day. (To read more on the history of Thanksgiving, go here)

This week families will be getting together to celebrate one of the most significant holidays in America. The excitement of upcoming family reunions reminds me of home - Malaysia. Be it Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali or Christmas, I am sure you will agree with me that we all look forward to reuniting with our loved ones during those holidays.
The poem above speaks true of a typical family reunions. The laughter and joys, the teasing and bragging. We will also notice changes in some folks - older, grayer, rounder, thinner, prettier, handsomer, younger (botox injections?), etc. Some return with additions to the family - children, grandchildren, wife, girlfriend, husband, boyfriend. While others to show off someone new - wife, girlfriend, husband, boyfriend. This usually brings about a healthy dose of gossip for the rest of the family - enough to last from the first hello to the last goodbye. We also have some reunions that are laced with drama and intrigue. Drama enough to fuel a best-selling novel or TV series.
Families are like fudge - mostly sweet with a few nuts. ~Author Unknown
Regardless of what a reunion brings, we all can agree that it is love of a family that pulls everyone together. No matter where we live in this world, family brings us home.

We certainly do. We sometimes complain about stuff. When we take a moment to ponder, we find that life isn't that bad at all. We have a lot to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too sweets!
j.t.,
Hmmm, nice story,and the poem too. Simply love ‘em both(“,).
I guess that always happen in family eh? But the hustles and bustles of today make it bit difficult to gather unless it is some special occasion.
I have no experience about thanksgiving day, but the joy, the objective, the laughter should be quite similar with the Raya and Deepavali and Chinese New Years eh?
Thanks to the technology today that we can make contact with the family more often, share stuffs and bluffs.
Good day(“,)
Hey Jacqui,
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones. Enjoy the holiday season to the brim. Shop loads. :)
Hey JT,
That was lovely sharing! Very lovely indeed...Thank you...
Hi KC
Thanks for the thoughtful wish. I just returned from a reunion (with my American relatives). I had a lovely time and looking forward to another gathering next year. :)
Hi Winnie
Thanks for the kind wishes. I have just returned from a wonderful reunion. I had so much fun catching up with some relatives I have not seen in years. Felt the love there. :)
You have a great weekend.
Hi Angel Eyes
Thanks dear.
By the way, there are some pretty serious sales going on right now. I believe you would go beserk with the spectacular discounts and offers that are up for grabs. You are going to love NY - more shopping opportunities. :)
Hi Akmal
It is true that in today's world, getting together with family can sometimes be difficult especially when most of us live far away from home.
Technology has enabled us to keep in touch but sometimes it is nothing like getting together to be in one room. I guess it is that need to feel the comfort of loved ones.
While we await to get together on special ocassions, we have to be thankful that we have emails, phones and what-not to "stay close".
I am glad I live in a modern world. I cannot imagine what it will be like without the conveniences I enjoy to stay in touch. :)
Hey Rashi
Thanks for your thoughtful and 'expensive' wish. Shop loads??? Oh dear, there is only so much I can spend in a season. I wouldn't want the credit card companies to gleefully rub their hands with joy because they have found another retail victim. :)
Hey Daphne
Thank you, dear. I appreciate it very much. :)
happy thanksgiving JT
Will you stand under the mistletoe for me please? Ahem, I know lah --thats Christmas... ;)
I too had my fair share of eating Turkeys during the halcyon days of my flaming youth, where those days in Texas, I was a novelty. So during this holiday period I was often dragged across the interstate to spend the weekend, and for them (girls, invariably) to 'show me-off'. He-hee, those days are long over and I'm way past my sell-by date. But I truly enjoyed Thanksgivings more than Christmases in fact, mistletoe notwithstanding. :)
In East Malaysia too there's something similar called the Pesta Ke'amatan and Pesta Gawai Dayak. Too bad we don't have them in Semenanjung.
Thanks for sharing and have a great Thanksgiving weekend, J.T.!
Hi JT,
I'm back!! Hehehe
Anyway, hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day... :)
j.t hv something for u on my blog..hop over when u hv time ok!
Hi JT, sorry for my late arrival. Was engaged busy.
Anyway, hope you guys had a wonderful thanksgiving.
Ours few days earlier.
See ya, Lee.
Hi Sue
Thanks for your thoughtful wishes. Have a good week ahead. :)
Hi Mat Salo
Most men here prefer Thanksgiving because it is one holiday where they do not have to shop for a gifts. :D Plus, they get to eat and watch football all day.
From my observation, Thanksgiving seems to be celebrated more meaningfully than Christmas. I have enjoyed Thanksgiving more than Christmases too. For me, it could be due to the fact that nothing can compare to my Malaysian Christmases. I miss the celebrations at home where not only family is involved but a host of friends too... and the joyous mood lasts for days.
Since Christmas is only a month away, I think it is OK to mention 'mistletoe'. ;)
Sure, why not? Just make sure the mistletoe is way above our heads and not anywhere else. hahaha
Hi Trueblue
So glad to see you back. :)
I had a wonderful Thanksgiving, thank you. It was fun catching up with my in laws whom I have not seen in a while.
Hi Winnie
I will be right over there. Be right back.

Hi Lee
So glad to see you back here again. Better late than never. ;)
Thanks for your thoughtful wish. I had a great time in Austin. This year, two of my in-laws managed to make it for the reunion. One I have not seen for 8 years and the other about 1.5 years. It was wonderful catching up with them.
By the way, welcome back to blogging, Lee. I am happy you made a decision to return to the blogosphere. I look forward to your 'ceritas'. :)
