This and that

You would have probably noticed by now that there is this weird weather system going on around the world. This is, by far, one of the coldest winters I have experienced. This makes me wonder, is there really global warming? I am no geological expert but my body certainly can tell it is not getting any warmer ... at least during this winter season. Sub-zero temperatures for more than a week is uncomfortable and unusual. And this comes from someone who is fortunate enough to be in a warm house (and grateful for it). I feel sorry for those who are homeless and those who have to work in horrendous icy temperatures because they do not have a choice.

On the positive side, I now have a huge freezer - my garden. If there is no place for food in the refrigerator, just put it out on the porch and it will be good the next day. I just need to make sure it is covered so that the neighbour's cat does not help himself to a frozen feast. Also, the garden looks pretty all white with snow (just ignore the plants that are trying to survive).

******************************************

Now, for a little walk down memory lane ... what were you doing in 1987? This only applies to those who remember 1987 for there is a possibility that some readers could have either been too young or too drunk to remember. :) One way I recall a piece of yesteryear is through music. Hearing a familiar song transports me back to a specific memory.

Here are a couple of Top 10s of 1987 that may jog your memory:

Billboard's Biggest Single

1. Faith by George Michael
2. Alone by Heart
3. I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston
4. C'est La Vie by Robbie Nevil
5. Shake You Down by Gregory Abbot
6. La Bamba by Los Lobos
7. Livin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi
8. Here I Go Again by Whitesnake
9. Heaven is a Place On Earth by Belinda Carlisle
10. The Time Of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

Most Watched TV Shows

1. The Cosby Show
2. A Different World
3. Cheers
4. The Golden Girls
5. Growing Pains
6. Who's The Boss
7. Night Court
8. 60 Minutes
9. Murder, She Wrote
10. Alf

Do any of these songs or TV shows bring back a specific memory?

Or you can put a cupboard outsite and voila! you've got urself another 'fridge'. hehe.

1987 is the year i took my spm. While waiting for add math paper (i think there was like 5-7 days gap) we decided to go out for a movie in town. Being young and wanting to be cool, we didnt want to wear our school uniform whc is either baju kurung or pinafore. Mind you, we had to climb the gate so we all decided to wear pants or jeans. After the movie, gotta climb the gate again and 1 of my frens shirt got stuck on the dawai thingy. There we were in the 'open' were the warden could see us and 1 of us is hanging on the gate! It was tough trying to help your fren while at the same time trying not to laugh too hard! lol.

1987? What I remember has nothing to do with the music.

I remember the economic recession. Those who graduated during that time (like yours truly) would find it difficult to find suitable jobs - so to me then it was apa-apa kerja oso can lah. So I became a casual staff (on daily pay basis @ RM10 a day).

If I'm not mistaken that was also the year when one army guy ran amok - causing people to think there was some sort of racial confontration in town. I was oblivious to what was happening - turun office after work (in Taman Maluri then) and it was sooooo quiet. By the time I got home, my housemates were so relieved to see me. They all got home much earlier (they were told to go home by their employers) and they thought I got stuck in the midst of a confrontation somewhere. In actual fact I apa habuk pun tak tau! Hehehe...

Anyway, how's Erdnuss coping with life in Germany? :)

I don't remember 1987, but I sure know some of those songs... :P Among the TV shows I only know The Cosby Show though. I've heard of Murder, She Wrote, but I've only read one of the books.

And oh yes, this winter is definitely horribly cold...especially last week!

Dear Jacqui

Consider this:

It was reported that the ecliptic, which is the angle between the earth's axis and its orbit, precessed when the Boxing Day 2004 earthquake and resultant tsunami hit at its epicentre in the Indian Ocean. This caused the axis to precess forward, and can you speculate on what happens to the Arctic and Antarctic Circles and the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer? The former incidences of the sun on earth would have changed, with attendant changes in weather. Your former circles would have both expanded and moved closer to the equator. You dont need much of an expansion to rouse weird weather changes. So now you have it. Or so the story goes.

Hi JT, Yes, it is one of the coldest winter in decades, the whole of Europe is suffering the same fate! All those Tv shows and songs are my favourites. I am such a TV addict, now i think i am cured completely! In 1987, at the age of 15 i got myself a steady boyfriend! His name was Dannie, a Eurasian and all those songs were our background music for our short lived affair hahahahahah But by the time Bon Jon Jovi got the tope spot with Livin on a prayer i was already with another chinese boy name Julian Charles Lee ; )

Thx for the trip down memory lane JT, what was your specific memory?
Warm hugs from across the border
Mush

Hi Farina

A cupboard outside is a good idea. Now to find one that will be suitable for all four seasons - food storage during winter and some other use for the rest of the year. :)

LOL .. that is a funny account of your friend getting stuck on the fence. We laugh now but I am sure it was not for her at that time. She must have panicked. School memories are one of the best, aren't they?

Hi Pi

wow ... you have very good memory. Now that you mentioned it, I recall joining the working world the following year - 1988 - as a temporary receptionist (Sep - Dec). Jobs were still hard to come by so just grab anything that will bring in some money - RM300 a month. Thankfully, one of the secretaries in the company decided to move on and she created a vacancy by Christmas.

Yes,yes, I remember that incident when the army guy ran amok. I was in college and the principal told us it is best to leave for home immediately - he did not want to take chances. He cancelled all classes for the rest of the day.

Hello WP

You must have been very, very young in 1987. :) Those songs are classics now... yikes! Even some of those shows are on TVLand channel (in the States) - specifically for classic shows.

Stay warm, WP. :)

Dear Jeffrey

Thank you for that explanation. That makes more sense than trying to understand what those climate change experts are trying to explain (and disputing each other). :)

Hi Mush,

Remember when radio used to play those songs to death? :) La Bamba was the most significant to me. That was the time, I was actively involved with the youth group and played the guitar for Chritmas carolling. I was a rookie but I had two excellent guitarists who taught me lots and eventually learned how to strum confidently. My favourite song on the guitar ... you've guessed it - La Bamba. :) It has been years since I played the guitar. Fingers are all 'karat'. hahaha

You had an interesting 1987. ;) Socially, that was the start of an interesting and emotionally tumultuous life for me. :P

Hugs from across the border. Wow.. we are just a border away!

JT, you are right - this winter is exceptionally cold. We had an anniversary celebration on Xmas day - and the turkey was too big for the fridge - so it stayed in the garden because, like you said , the garden is one big freezer.

I cant remember much of the songs you mentioned but certainly some of the TV programmes, like Murder She wrote and The Golden Girls. I remember this year to be quite a busy year for me - was still working at the BBC and we were working very hard to increase number of listeners. Did several trips back home to visit radio stations in the region and did a recruitment drive.

aaah, it is cold!

J.T. said...

Hello Kak Teh

That was a busy year for you. You must have racked up mileage points with all that flying back and forth.

Golden Girls still remains as one of my favourites. When I was in the States, I was watching re-runs every week night. :)

I was having a wonderful time in heaven playing among the flowers and with other angels and all. :)
i LOVED it there. and then I had to come here sigh.
but it must be done.

Hi KC

Those were the days of cassettes, huh? Actually I think CDs were around but they were considered a luxury item. I knew a family who owned a collection of CDs and a player. The son showed us what a CD looked like (in 1987) at a Christmas party - those of us who did not know what a CD was, were in awe. hahaha So "ulu"
Anyway, I stuck with cassettes for as long as I could because I could not afford CDs.

I am with you on trying keep up with latest songs - no idea! :D

J.T. said...

Hello Clarisse

Oh ... you are so young. (no, I am not going to ask which year you were born). :)

Yes, you had a mission on earth - to join us as a citizen of the world and fulfill your destiny.

Cheers!

Hi J.T.

Oh yeah, these songs and TV shows did bring back a lot of memories. And I will always remmeber MJ's Beat It, Thriller, and Billy Jean- they were hits during school performances. Oh and my fav bands, Duran Duran, Wham and Aha! Man, I'm old!

In the 80s, I was still in secondary school and had the best time of my life.

J.T. said...

Hi Dawn

I cannot forget how popular MJ and his songs were. Remember when he took back almost every Grammy that one year? His songs (especially in the pasar malam) would go on and on. Yeah, I loved Duran-Duran (Hungry Like a Wolf comes to mind) and Aha (Take On Me) too. Now, the 80s songs are considered classic. Yes, we are old - just like how 60s music in the 1980s were considered classics. hahaha

Hi JT,

The weather certainly is having a mind of it's own. I guess it realised humans did not care, it decided to play a game on us...oh it's late at night now JT, so that's the best I can do with explanation...LOL.

Oooo...nostalgic nya JT ni. Wow, I do agree, you have immaculate memory. Nice to go back in time & reminisce. Take care dear.

J.T. said...

Hi Ruby

uh oh ... I cannot take credit for having immaculate memory. I had help with that list. :)
It is nice to reminisce the good old days. So many sweet memories.

Your late night weather explanation does makes sense - we cannot control the weather.

You take care too.

ppl who take great measures to save electricity might find it a blessing though - they'd switch off the refrigerator and dump all their foodstuffs in the garden!

Hello Monica

Sorry I have been busy with other things and have not been able to do much blogging.

Thanks for dropping by and reminding me to visit you. :)

Take care and see you soon.

Hi KC

I think CDs were around in the mid-80s. I remember the radio station having a segment called "CD hour" or something like that and it was classical music. I kept wondering what was CD but never found out until years later. haha

It is not as frosty as the previous weeks but we do get the ocassional flurries these days. The temperature has remained on average 1C - not too bad considering the below-zero conditions a few weeks back.

J.T. said...

Hi Sue

I am sure you are aware that lots of people here are very conscious about energy saving, recycling and the environment. There are so many tips, practices and laws to follow.
That said, I have yet to see anyone dump their foodstuff in the garden during winter. :D
I have seen some put out their food in pots after a Christmas or New Year party, though. It is enough to keep the food fresh for next day.
