What would you like do next?

I was browsing around the web for inspiration and found an article on iVillage about "Things We Want to Do Next".

"What's the next talent you'd like to acquire, the next skill you'd like to master? Did you always want to learn how to sail, or golf like a pro? Do you want to learn to bake like a French pastry chef?"

For as long as I can remember, I have always been in search of new things to learn. I used the library to read up on things I wanted to know. Before I entered into the working world, I frequented the library for recipes! Yeah, my mom wondered what got into me. I figured since I was sitting at home for a few months (freeloading), I might as well contribute to expanding our family's menu for meal times. I was also determined to try baking a cake before I turned 21 and I did. My first cake was Orange Cake. Happy to report no one died from all my experiments. yippee!

When I saw how interesting cross-stitching was, I asked my cousin to teach me. Then, as the years progressed, I bought books for more ideas.
Another area of interest is learning foreign languages. I have learned several but with anything, if there is no practice, the skill goes down the drain. I have forgotten Mandarin and Tagalog. I can only get by with "How are you?" and counting from one to ten in those languages. Could those words come in handy to save one's life?

I still have interested in learning more things. The current interests, among others, are more languages (and keeping up with it) and life-saving skills. I have completed a course (and passed the exams) in First Aid and CPR by the American Red Cross but I would like to acquire life-saving skills in the waters. To do that, I first need to venture out to the deeper side of the pool!

Enough of my ramblings. Here's the rest of the article from iVillage.

*************************************************************************

We put the question to iVillagers: "What's the next thing you want to learn how to do?" The responses we got were amazing and inspiring — as one iVillager put it, "There are so many things I want to do, I think I'll need a few lifetimes to fulfill them all."

1. I would like to speak fluent Arabic… or at least be able to make conversation!

2. The next things I'd like to learn are how to (properly) cook Indonesian and Chinese cuisines.

3. At the moment, I'm working on developing my portrait photography skills by training and working in a portrait studio part-time. I've been doing nature photography for decades, and now I'm branching out into "people photography."

4. I would like to learn to really dance. I can wiggle my booty to rock (no skill required — LOL), but I would love to learn salsa or ballroom dancing. That would be awesome!

5. I'd love to learn to paint. Now that I work for an artist, I have a different way of looking at each canvas.

6. I would like to gain the CompTIA A+ certification. I fiddle with computers a lot, and I've even built two myself. But it would be nice to have that piece of paper that says I can do it, and I would probably learn a lot more along the way.

7. The goal that I am currently working on is finding a community of people who support one another on individual spiritual paths.

8. I'd love to learn to rock climb.

9. I want to learn how to grow an herb or vegetable garden. Or at least "grow" a green thumb, so my plants will survive my overwatering them!

10. I want to relearn math. I got myself some of those little-kid flashcards and have been working on memorizing the times tables. I'm doing pretty well… All the old noggin needs is a push!

*************************************************************************
(Note: These wishes, from 1 to 10, were from readers at iVillage. They are interesting - I would like to learn some of them.)

So, what would you like to do next?

The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live. ~Mortimer Adler

(P.S. I will be busy the whole of next week. As such, I will update my blog when the week is over.)

Hello J.T.
Nice post. I would like to dance Tango, in a very good performance.
It should be great.
Have a nice weekend.

wow....you want to speak fluent arabic ...I'm ashamed... I'm still 'crawling' with my arabic.... but that's not the next thing I want to do ..

My next thing to do ( that's my plan backhome)... to be patiently taking care of my mom.I've never tried before..it needs a lot of patience which makes me always pray to GOD to help me going thru this matter...as for another skill that I'm still lacking....cooking the most delicious meals for my family....

have a nice weekend !!

J.T. said...

Hi Odele

Oh yes, the Tango is one dance I have not learned yet. I would love to try that one someday. :)

Hi Sarinah

Oh no...that list is from iVillage - the online magazine. It is a collection of what their readers would like to do.
I won't deny though that Arabic is on my list but not just yet.

Anyway, I am confident you will be able to take care of your mom. *hugs*

As for cooking the most delicious meals, I feel that if your family has requested for certain dishes because it is their favourites, you have already acquired that skill you want. :)

as for me, i supposed practically, i'll hv to start learning to drive hehe

silversarina said...

hi jt.,

ooppssss sorry, I misread it... anyhow, learning arabic is somewhat very difficult for me since I don't have any arabic lesson before...except for reading the holy Quran and refer to the translation.... LOL...

J.T. said...

Hi Winnie

Yeah.. that list is from iVillage.
Right now, my goal are languages and life-saving skills.

I thought you were driving around Canada already. :D Never too late to start.
I was always afraid to drive a pick-up truck because it looks so big and looks heavy. I finally did it. Now, all I need is a cowboy hat and a pair of boots to complete the look. haha

J.T. said...

Hi Sarinah,

Don't worry about it. Thanks for the earlier comment, though. It gave me an idea to put a note that that wishlist is not mine. :)

Have a nice break, JT. Lee.

Been sometime since I dropped by....haw are you doing?

Hi Lee,

A beautiful and heartfelt desire. An inspiration, indeed.

Thanks and have a good weekend, Lee. :)

Thanks for dropping by again. I'm doing well. I'm cruising through the summer with some local activities.

By the way, I've been enjoying your posts. I always look forward to them. They're informative and entertaining. :)

Hi J.T.

Beautiful post. There are so many things in life I want to learn and I'm always learning, but I think the most important thing I need to learn is to be patient. My fuse is still very short!

Have a great rest of the weekend.

My dad prohibited Music at home
and i now have 2 left feet

My dad had the fear that like all GOANS in India, we wud also take up to music as a profession and neglect our studies

Music groups had no future my dad said

first they play at restaurants and weddings

when they dont make it there
they end up playing for funerals

In GOA, India a brass band plays on your final journey

Hi JT,

'The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live. ~Mortimer Adler'...I truly subscribe to this. A long time ago, I took off a year and half to do nothing and stayed at home with my two toddlers then. I did not handle idleness very well. I started not to feel intelligent and I started to feel sluggish and slow...ha ha. What I should have done was yes stay at home but get interested in other new hobbies..I didn't!! But I never looked back now...all systems go go go!

The mind is truly amazing. New interests make the mind tick and our memory is sharpened too I noticed.

JT, even going out to socialise does good to the brain I heard, what more new skills.

I would like to take up belly dancing, do a series of tv programmes on motivation, set up an art gallery...these are affirmations my dear (all new experiences for me).

JT, thank you for being ever supportive. You make a such nice friend and sister. Cheers.

Patience is something good to learn. I need it for times when unexpected and pressing issues come up.

Have a wonderful weekend. :)

Hi Jim

It's never too late to learn to dance or play a musical instrument, Jim. I still hope that I will get back to playing the flute again. It has been 26 years since I played one.

I almost signed up for an adult ballet class too (class was full and it was the last one. The teacher left the country). I wanted so much to take up ballet when I was young but my dad could not afford it. In fact, I did not start piano lessons till I was a teenager.

It is a pity that your dad did not see the benefits of learning music. It is not always about entertaining the masses. You can teach too. There was a short time when I coached a friend in theory of music.

I wish you all the best, Jim. Go and pursue that dream of dancing.

Hi Ruby dear,

Oh my, I know exactly how you felt - sluggish and slow. I did not do too well sitting at home as a housewife in the States. I needed to occupy myself with some work. Cross stitching and reading was good but I needed more. I started volunteering at the church. Socialising and interacting did some good. Eventually I got a job and then pursued a language course. Next thing we moved to Germany. I found things to do... again.

Wow Ruby, belly dancing! That sounds fun and seductive. :D
I hope you get to do all that you would like... and more.

Thank you for your kind words. I feel the same way about you, Ruby.

Cheers!

Hello Tony SUP

Cafe in the Mediterranean - sounds wonderful. Let me know when and where and I will be there with bells on. :) Thanks for the invitation.

Tony, just as how you achieved your dream of the Cafe in Kenny Hills, you will do it again, for sure. All the best.

Yo JT,

Haha...If I were to fill out how many things I want to do, the list would be endless...

Let's see, among the many, many, many things I want to do:

1) Learn to dance (if anybody points out I walk like I've got two left feet, I'll *Piak* them)

2) Learn to swim properly

3) Learn French properly...

4) Learn the violin, clarinet, drums, saxophone (Somebody stop me, or I will want to be the entire orchestra)...

5) Get an iguana...And a Golden Retriever...

Someday JT, someday, I will...

6) Which will never happen, but I can dream: Meet Tun Dr Mahathir and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah...

And the thing I want(ed) to do most of all, which I will never get to do:

Adopt Chee Keong, officially...

Sigh...

You know, I may blog about this (What I wanna do!) one day! Good idea *Thanks!*...

Daphne Ling said...

Oh, by the way, tumpang to Uncle Lee, yeah JT,

Uncle Lee,

You remember how you said you're going to teach me how to swim and dance? Hehehe...I remember! One day...

Thanks!

J.T. said...

Yo Daphne!

I am sure you will get to do all those things ... even learn to play every instrument in the orchestra. When the opportunity comes up, grab it.
It is exciting, you know. When I was in the school band, my friends and I always exchanged musical instruments during our break times at band practice. Most of us could play other instruments too. :D
I forgot to add that I want to learn the violin ... someday.

Daphne, your no. 6 dream is closer than you know it. ;) I am certain you will.

By the way, you may not have adopted Chee Keong officially but you have him in your heart eternally. He was your son from the day he entered into your life. *hugs*

Looking forward to reading your post about what you want to do. :)

Typhoon Sue said...

tonnes and tonnes of things to do in my life. Haven't started on ANY of those really. But for a start, I want to learn to cook properly. Now if my mom ask me to cook anything, i can just make ayam masak kicap and telur dadar ...pathetic!!!

Hello Odele

Thanks for the visit and wishing you are nice week too.

Hello David

So glad that you are back from your mission. It is such a blessing when you have many volunteers to help.

God bless you for your work, David. Wishing you all the best for the future.

J.T. said...

Hi Trueblue,

I think learning sign language teaches us more than just the ability to communicate with the hearing-impaired. We learn to appreciate what we take for granted.

All the best to you. :)

J.T. said...

Hi Pi,

What you said is true. If we have a long list but do not start on anything, they remain dreams. But if we shorten it to goals we can achieve within a given time, we will see it happening.

Good insight, Pi. Thanks. :)

J.T. said...

Hi Sue,

I think you have started on something. Didn't you say you are studying French? I would consider that a good start.

As for cooking, sometimes I can't be bothered to cook from scratch, I just use those rempah packets. :D

Hi JT

I blog hop from somewhere ...

I'd love to pick up some languages too. I learned a bit of Japanese, Arabic & French during high school. Unfortunately, I left them all at the school gate.

And like Ruby, I'd love to learn belly dancing too one fine day. But I think I need to loose those excess fat from my bulging tummy first. Those nasty fats are making my tummy dance even without music!!
Uh! Unsightly scene.

Cheers!

Hey JT:

I must begin by learning to not procrastinate. :)

Other than this, I want to continue with singing classes.

I want to learn Bangla (A language spoken in parts of Eastern India). Also French. Learned some French in college. I want to be able to speak fluently.

I want to take formal dance lessons too.

I also want to learn to cook Thai red and green curry chicken.. my absolute favorite dishes. :)

J.T. said...

Hi Ibu

Welcome to my blog. :)

Wow.. you learned very interesting languages. It is hard to keep up with the foreign languages when we don't practice them, isn't it?

You wrote: "...fats are making my tummy dance even without music!!.."
LOL... you are too funny.
I say go for belly dancing, anyway. Good exercise. :) Just as how U.Lee says ballroom dancing makes one sweat.

J.T. said...

Pearly my dear, those 10 things on the list are not mine. It is from iVillage, the online magazine. :)
But that does not mean I don't want to do anything on that list. They are not my immediate goal, though. One thing at a time. :D If not, I will go crazy.

At least, I was successful in making a batch of Oil Fry Ghost - thanks to your recipe and help. I would like to learn to cook more Chinese delicacies some day. :)

Thanks for the compliment, Pearly. Appreciate it very much.

J.T. said...

Hey Rashikaps

Learning to not procrastinate is the first step, for sure. :D

How long have you been going for singing classes? I did it for a few months just to get the basic techniques.

Thai red and green curry - Lovely dish, which I haven't learned to cook from scratch. I have a short-cut method, though. Just buy the ready-made paste in packets. :)

pearly said...

hi weldone! you make it,I am so pround of you my dear , the next thing you must cook is when you receive those balache and cook some malaysian dish ok xxxxx

Typhoon Sue said...

yes, I've started studying the french language, but after 7 months into it, I'm still just starting.... so, .. *sigh*

must learn to cook properly though, all these rempah packets and the MSG in it, my body is practically 90% MSG already. Need to go natural now

Angel Eyes said...

1)I would like to take up Spanish, apart from French.

2) Yes, i would like to be able to draw a potrait. Used to take up those classes after my uni but it was only half way.

3) Learn how to cook, esp chinese cuisine

4) Take up fencing courses during the weekends

Rashikaps said...

Hey, I was part of the school choir.. used to play the guitar too then. Forgotten all that now. I took a few classes last year to learn the basics.
I now want to learn some more. :) Is a big stress buster.. considering the high pressure lives we live ..it can be highly therapeutic.

Hi Pearly,

I can't wait to get my hands on the belacan. I'm thinking of a couple of dishes already. Thanks again, Pearly. I appreciate it very much. :)

J.T. said...

Hi Sue,

You are right about MSG in those rempah packets. Going natural is better but I have no choice. Asian stores are just too far away for me to get fresh ingredients. Luckily I don't cook Malaysian dishes often, which leads to lots of craving for it. :)

J.T. said...

Hello Angel

Interesting list you have there, especially drawing portraits and fencing.

I am guessing that it will not be too difficult for you to get back to portraits again. At least, you have learned the basics.

J.T. said...

Hi Rashikaps

School choir - me too! (in primary school. My secondary school did not offer it, unfortunately).
Guitar - me too! Well, I learned to play the acoustic guitar from books and my brother's friends (many, many years ago) but I would really like to learn how to play the classical guitar.

Good for you that you have the basics. You should continue. You can carry a guitar everywhere and it can be your constant companion. I wish it was that easy with a piano. :D

I've always wanted to learn how to juggle. It was one of my new year resolution longgggg ago, never happened though. i still hope i can do that one day. not exactly a very outstanding piece of skill but it's something that i like quite a bit. dunno why.

J.T. said...

Hey Wailer,

Some wishes can come true when you start working towards it. :)

J.T. said...

Hey Zewt

Juggling may not be an outstanding piece of skill, as you say, but it is a skill nevertheless. Some people make money out of it.

Many years ago when I was holidaying in Club Med Cherating, one of the social coordinators had a short lesson on juggling. I tried it but could not get past juggling two objects.

(Maybe I was distracted because he was so darn good-looking! Trying to console myself. haha)

Hello Wailer

That quote from Maya Angelou is my all time favourite. Definitely a worthwhile saying.

My hiatus is off and on. I've been tied up with some stuff over the summer. Also, suffering from blogger's block (if I may call it that) at the same time. Sometimes I wonder if there is anything worth blogging about. :)
I hope to get back to 'normal' by September.

Hello Mo'men Mohamed

There are some wishes and goals that are hard to accomplish but I think some of these are attainable given the right time and the right place and a drive get it accomplished. Some of the goals I had as a teenager could not be realised until I was well into my 30s.

Granted that some wishes will remain wishes due to circumstances beyond our control.

I wish you all the best and hope you get to do what you wish - no matter how daunting it seems.

Thanks for visiting. Have a good weekend. :)
