Ich habe keine Idee

It has been a long dry spell. I haven't been able to come up with anything to blog about. I promised myself that I will not be pressured into writing. Still, I have been wondering "why can't I write like before?" I have been turning to articles, tags and jokes from the web to get by. I have contemplated on taking a long hiatus but decided against it. I have met so many beautiful and interesting people since I stepped into the blogosphere. It is hard to stay away from them and their blogs.

Some blogs take me down memory lane. Some blogs bring awareness about the less fortunate in our world. Some speak about events in their life and some about our current socio-political scene. With so much inspiration around me, I should be able to blog about something, right? Nein. Ich habe keine Idee (Translation: No, I have no idea).

Hey! wait.. I am into my third paragraph. That's progress albeit just ramblings. Before I go on aimlessly, I would like to share something that has always amused me, no matter how many times I've read it.

Europe English

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five year phase-in plan that would be known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be ekspekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"s in the language is disgraseful, and they should go away.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi to understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru

While we are on that,
have you seen this video before?

See... English is important!

In case you're wondering, I am not going on a German-bashing spree here. I'm just sharing what I've experienced hearing in the past six years.

I can speak a little German but I always try to get away by saying, "Sprechen Sie Englisch? Mein Deutsch ist nicht gut." (Translation: Do you speak English? My German is not good.) Try, I said. Sometimes - no luck.

I don't mind speaking the language. I am just afraid that someone will take that little knowledge I have as an indication to carry out a conversation. Believe me, that happened in my first year in Germany. I used to give a defeated look and then promptly declare, "Ich spreche Deutsch nicht" (Translation: I don't speak German) afterwhich I would get a strange look. Why? Because I just spoke in German! I probably came off as unfriendly. Oh well ...

Wow... I just wrote an entry and I thought I couldn't. I guess that is all for now. Till the next time, adios ... I mean Auf Wiedersehen.

A Music Shuffle

I am tied up with some things currently and will not be able to update my blog regularly. Since I just cannot think of anything to blog about today, I will resort to fulfilling another tag (which I should have done about two weeks ago). I was tagged by Rad - to do "A Music Shuffle MeMe".

Since she was unsure of the origin and details of this tag, she modified it a little - to her taste.

I was curious about its origin and I 'googled' this game (two weeks ago) and found many forms of "Shuffle Your Music".

I am going with this version:

Rules: To play this, you need an Ipod or Mp3 player with a "shuffle" feature that allows random shuffling among all the music stored on it. You can even do this on your computer music library, like iTunes, if it’ll let you shuffle.

Answer each question by shuffling to the next song to see what song comes up...and there’s the answer to your question!

1. How does the world see me? She - Elvis Costello (from Nottinghill Soundtrack)

She may be the face I can't forget
The trace of pleasure or regret
Maybe my treasure or the price I have to pay
She may be the song that summer sings
May be the chill that autumn brings
May be a hundred different things
Within the measure of a day

She may be the beauty or the beast
May be the famine or the feast
May turn each day into a Heaven or a Hell
She may be the mirror of my dreams
A smile reflected in a stream
She may not be what she may seem
Inside her shell....

2. Will I have a happy life? As Time Goes By - Frank Sinatra

3. What do my friends really think of me? Piano Man - Billy Joel

Sing us a song, youre the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, were all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright

4. Do people secretly lust after me? For The Longest Time - Billy Joel

HAHAHAHA ....*pause* ... HAHAHAHAHA
How funny was that - to land on that song?

5. How can I make myself happy? Beyond The Sea - Bobby Darin

Another land, perhaps.

6. What should I do with my life? Volare - Dean Martin

I will fly! (that's what 'Volare' means in Spanish). Fly as far and as wide as I can.

7. What is my day going to be like?
My Way - Frank Sinatra

8. What is some good advice for me? My Humps - Black Eyed Peas

HAHAHAHA... *pause*... HAHAHAHA
What you goin' do with all that junk? All that junk , inside your trunk?

9. How will I be remembered? When You're Good To Mama - Queen Latifah (from Chicago soundtrack)

When you're good to this mama, she'll be good to you. HAHAHA

11. What song will play at my funeral? Almost Paradise - Anne Wilson & Mike Reno (from Footloose soundtrack)

12. What type of men do I like? When You Say Nothing At All - Ronan Keating

I am trying not to impose this on anyone, although I have some people in mind. If you want to blog about something fun and light, please feel free to pick this up.

If your kids are bored and do not know what to do with themselves (and probably brooding around the house), have a family game session and get them to share their music with you (that way you will know what they are listening to). Be creative. Make up new questions - make fun of your relatives, if you have to. :D Have fun!

“Fun is good.”

Update: Following some comments, I think I am able to figure out who would like to try this. I hereby tag:

Rashikaps
Winnie the Pooh
Pearly
Kak Teh

Take your time. It is no fun if you pressure yourself. This tag is valid until ... the twelfth of never. :)

You're fortunate ...

Whenever I eat at a Chinese restaurant (or order a take-out) here in Germany, a fortune cookie comes with the meal. It is always fun to break it open to read the message. Some cookies are too hard to bite into and if I defied common sense, then I am just another fool contributing to my dentist's next vacation.

Did you know that fortune cookies originated from California? That's right - in the good old U.S. of A. However, no one knows who the actual inventor was and which city in California is the true home of the fortune cookie. It is still being debated. (Don't people have other things to do?)

According to one history, David Jung, a Chinese immigrant living in Los Angeles and founder of the Hong Kong Noodle Company, invented the cookie in 1918. He was concerned about the poor meandering around his shop. He created the cookie and passed them out free on the streets. He stuffed each cookie with a strip of paper with an inspirational Bible scripture on it, written for him by a Presbyterian minister.

Another history asserts that the fortune cookie was invented in San Francisco by a Japanese immigrant named Makoto Hagiwara. He was a gardener who designed the famous Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park. Around the turn of the century, an anti-Japanese mayor fired him from his job. He was later reinstated by a new mayor. In appreciation for those who stood by him during his period of hardship, Hagiwara created a cookie in 1914 that included a thank you note inside. He passed them out at the Garden and began serving them there regularly.

Fortune cookies became common in Chinese restaurants after World War II. Since desserts were not traditionally part of Chinese cuisine, the cookies offered Americans something familiar with an exotic flair.

Some individuals actually like the texture and flavor of fortune cookies (I won't mind it if they were a little crispier) but many consider the fortune to be the essence of the cookie.

In the early days, fortunes featured Biblical sayings, or aphorisms from Confucius, Aesop, or Ben Franklin. Later, they began to recommend lottery numbers. Smiley faces, jokes and banal advice were also added as messages. Politicians have used them in campaigns (will we see this in the next elections?). Today, fortune cookies are customised for weddings and birthday parties too.

When I get a fortune cookie, I can't wait to break it open for a prediction because no matter what message I get, it amuses me (you will know why when you read right to the end).

Here are some samples of messages we can get in fortune cookies these days.

A secret admirer will soon send you a sign of affection.

If you continually give, you will continually have.

Your heart will always make itself known through your words.

Love is like wildflowers...it is often found in the most unlikely places.

Something you lost will soon turn up.

A pleasant surprise is in store for you.

You will be invited to an exciting event.

Flattery will go far tonight.

You can always find happiness at work on Friday.

The greatest danger could be your stupidity.

You should be able to undertake and complete anything.

The first step to better times is to imagine them.

The skills you have gathered will one day come in handy.

Someone told me that a fortune cookie message is more fun to read when the words "in bed" are added to the end of the sentence. I have never been able to go back since that revelation. Go ahead, try it with the ones above.

Did not have enough? For more samples, go here.

Juvenile Views

The innocence of a child never ceases to amuse me. Here are some children's views on life, love and relationships.

WHAT EXACTLY IS MARRIAGE?

"Marriage is when you get to keep your girl and don't have to give her back to her parents." - Eric, 6

HOW DOES A PERSON DECIDE WHOM TO MARRY?

"You flip a coin and heads means you stay with him and tails means you try the next one." - Kelly, 9

"My mother says to look for a man who is kind ... That's what I'll do... I'll find somebody who's kinda ... tall and handsome." - Carolyn, 8

CONCERNING THE PROPER AGE TO GET MARRIED.

"Eighty four because at that age, you don't have to work anymore and you can spend all your time loving each other." - Sandra, 8

"Once I'm done with kindergarten, I'm going to find me a wife." - Bert, 5

HOW DID YOUR MOM AND DAD MEET?

"They were at a dance party at a friend's house. Then they went for a drive but their car broke down. It was a good thing because it gave them a chance to find out about their values." - Laura, 9

WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?

"On their first date they just tell each other lies and that usually get them interested enough to go for a second date." - Martin, 10

WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?

"You should never kiss a girl unless you have enough money to buy her a ring and her own VCR because she'll want to have videos of the wedding." - Allan, 10

"Never kiss in front of people. It's a big embarrassing thing if anybody sees you. If nobody sees you, I might be willing to try it with a handsome boy but just for a few minutes." - Karen, 9

THE GREAT DEBATE: IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?

"You should ask people who read Cosmopolitan." - Linda, 10

"It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need somebody to clean up after them!" - Anita, 9

It gives me a headache to think about that stuff. I'm just a kid. I don't need that kind of trouble." - William, 7

Is Your Pool Safe?

A blogger from Brazil dropped by my blog for a visit recently. Her name is Odele Souza. This was her comment:

"Hello, I am Brazilian. I arrive here because I read your comment in David Santos' blog. My blog, Flavia, Vivendo em Coma (Flavia, living in Eats) is dedicated to my daughter Flavia, who is in coma for more than nine years. The blog is written in Portuguese but you can read it in English or another language, just clicking on the right flag. The translation is not so good but helps. Thanks for your attention. ... "

I visited her blog and used the computer translation (note to self: learn more languages!). My heart went to bits reading about her daughter's condition. I still could not understand what caused Flavia to be in a coma until yesterday when Odele posted a story about a young girl, named Abigail Taylor, who nearly died in an awful pool accident.

I wanted to share Flavia's story but I did not want to give out any wrong information based on the computer translation. I had to ask Odele for her help. Here's what she said:

"The translation services on the blog is not any great prize, and because of this you didn't understant the whole story about Flavia. When I mention the accident with Abigail is because of the same reason. I meam, both Flavia and Abigail had been victims of a filtration system of a pool, - with problem.

On January 06, 1998 Flavia was swimming in the pool of the building were we lived, whem the filtration system of the pool got Flavia's hair under water, and this happened because of the strong suction of the drain, that lately was proved had problem. Abigail like Flavia, were victim of negligence. If the filtration system is in order nothing happens with people while swmming, but if on the contrary, the filtration system is not in order, it can be very dangerous to be in the pool.

It is important to protest against this kind of negligence and clain for justice. That is what I am trying to do with Flavia'a blog: Clain for justice, because till now, ten years after the accident that left Flavia in Coma, the responsible for the negligence with the drain didn't pay for nothing. It is also important to alert people for this kind of danger in the pools.

In spite of my English is not any great prize too, I hope you can understand now a litlle more about Flavia and Abigail accident...."

This is an excerpt of Abigail's story from Kare11 News, Minneapolis:

"Abigail Taylor is what doctors call a medical miracle. The six-year-old is sitting up, talking and fully aware that she nearly died last Friday in a horrific pool accident at the Minneapolis Golf Club's Kiddie Pool. Abigail sat on the drain at the bottom of the pool and doctors say her bottom created suction on the drain. They say the strength of the suction from the drain pulled part of her small intestines out of her rear end. Her mom says Abbey somehow pulled herself off the drain and out of the pool before collapsing into the deep end of the regular pool."

Read more here.

This is an excerpt from Baltimore's WJZ's report:

"In some pools, the suction is strong enough to pull your insides out.

That's the disturbing reality for a six-year-old in Minnesota girl. There's a push for tougher pools safety laws to stop it from happening in Maryland. Mike Hellgren reports little Abigail Taylor has bright brown eyes and a big smile, but she will never be the same again after a pool drain in a swimming pool sucked out her intestines and ended up in the filter.

"She more or less blacked out, she passed out, fell face-first onto the pool decking," said her father Scott Taylor. The suction ripped a hole in her rectum. She'll have to be fed through a tube and will have to wear a colostomy bag for the rest of her life."It never even crosses anybody's mind that potential at the bottom of that pool is enough force to literally disembowel a child, an adult," said Scott Taylor"

Read more here.

Since 1990, 170 people--mostly children--have been caught in drains and 27 of them have died. (File) CBS

Odele Souza added:

".. To read more about Abigail'story in Google search "Abigail Taylor accident pool" and you can read the story in English. About Flavia unfortunately what exists till now is only in Portuguese, so you can help telling also her story in your country.

As I told you, both accidents happened because of the strong suction of the filtration system in the pool were the girls - Flavia and Abigail were swimming. I am very concerned about Abigail because I am afraid she can stay like my daughter Flavia, who is still unconscious, even ten years after the accident. ..."

"Holy" Weekend

The weekend is here again. Time to relax and unwind. I need it! I was caught up with unexpected errands this week and I had to put aside some routine work. I have finally caught up with them.

It will be a good time for me to continue reading Michael Byrnes' fictional work titled Sacred Bones.
"At the crossroads of Christian, Islamic, and Jewish faiths, an ancient artifact is stolen from a long-hidden vault located directly beneath Jerusalem's Temple Mount ..."

While I enjoy my "holy" book this weekend, here are some "holy"stuff to lighten your spirit. Enjoy!

An Atheist and a Bear

An atheist was taking a walk through the woods, admiring all that evolution had created.
"What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!", he said to himself. As he was walking along the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. When he turned to see what the casue was, he saw a 7-foot grizzly charging right towards him. He ran as fast as he could. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing, He ran even faster, crying in fear. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. His heart was pounding and he tried to run even faster. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up, but saw the bear right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him.

At that moment, the Atheist cried out "Oh my God!...." Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. Even the river stopped moving.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky, "You deny my existence for all of these years; teach others I don''t exist; and even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?"

The atheist looked directly into the light "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask You to treat me as Christian now, but perhaps could you make the bear a Christian?" "Very well," said the voice.

The light went out. The river ran again. And the sounds of the forest resumed.

And then the bear dropped his right paw ..... brought both paws together...bowed his head and spoke: "Lord, for this food which I am about to receive, I am truly thankful."

Little Mary Margaret was not the best student in Catholic School. Usually she slept through the class.

One day her teacher, a Nun, called on her while she was sleeping. "Tell me Mary Margaret, who created the universe?"

When Mary Margaret didn't stir, little Johnny who was her friend, sitting behind her, took his pencil and jabbed her in the rear. "God Almighty!" shouted Mary Margaret. The Nun said, "Very good" and continued teaching her class.

A little later the Nun asked Mary Margaret, "Who is our Lord and Saviour?"

But Mary didn't stir from her slumber. Once again, Johnny came to her rescue and stuck Mary Margaret in the butt.

"Jesus Christ!!!" shouted Mary Margaret and the Nun once again said, !

"Very good," and Mary Margaret fell back a sleep.

The Nun asked her a third question..."What did Eve say to Adam after she had her twenty-third child?"

Again, Johnny came to the rescue.

This time Mary Margaret jumped up and shouted, "If you stick that damn thing in me one more time, I'll break it in half!"

The nun fainted...........

Annoying Things Women Do

This is a follow-up from my last posting on Ryan Murphy's Men's Top 10 Annoying Domestic Habits. As promised, here's an entry on what men find annoying in women.

Shawn Croft of AskMen came up with these 10 interesting points. In his article at that website, Mr. Croft says this:

"Men love women. The way they look, smell, walk and talk are just some of the reasons why we consider them a divine species. Yet we can't live with them, and we certainly can't live without them...
...for the most part anyway, because perfect, they are not. And upon serious analysis, I've discovered the top 10 things women do that drive men to the brink of insanity."

So, here's Mr Croft's 10 Annoying Things Women Do

Number 10 - Pretend to be virtuous

"A recurring theme among many women is that they try to place themselves under a "holier than thou" light, never admitting that they fooled around or dividing their number of boyfriends by five. Now, we applaud those ladies who truly are innocent and pure, but the rest should stop trying to water down their past. Women are allowed to have just as much fun as guys, and they should find a man who can appreciate that."

Number 9 - Criticize other women

"Why is it that many women can't make a simple compliment toward another woman? They love to nitpick about everything from weight to hairstyle and everything in between. Only a woman will notice if another woman's shoes don't match her purse and turn it into a calamity. Granted there are some women who are readily willing to admit when another woman is hot (and hopefully invite her over for a ménage), but most don't want to distract their men with any competition. Nevertheless, we spot the hot ones anyway."

Number 8 - Act jealous

"Often times, just mentioning another woman's name can spell the end of your existence. Imagine, then, the warfare you'll have to endure if she finds out you were at a gentleman's club. Call it what you will, but a lot of women have this thing that causes them to second-guess everything, especially their man's loyalty. That's why when another female enters the equation in any way, shape or form, she tenses up. If you've given her reason to doubt you, then her paranoia is likely justified. Otherwise, you shouldn't have to pay the price because she's feeling insecure."

Number 7 - Become needy

"Some women have some serious security issues. They need their men to hold them, rub them, and tell them how special they are. They turn men into their emotional crutch and look to us for moral, mental and emotional support. There's a real irony here when you think of all the women who go out of their way to show us how independent they are. These are usually the same women who become extremely insecure once they finally fall in love. Of course, as tempting as it may be to use this to our advantage, I think most men would prefer the tougher version. This way, they'd at least retain some peace of mind."

Number 6 - Speak in code

"The old "What are you thinking?" question is a timeless example of how women love to test their men and search for our true feelings about them. They hurdle obscure, theoretical questions at us that, according to them, we're supposed to know the answer to if we're really their soul mates . What a pitiful sight it is, seeing a guy tense up as his mind goes into overdrive, looking for the right answer, while his lady looks on from a distance with her arms folded and foot tapping. At this point, there's nothing left to do except throw an answer out there and hope we don't end up in the doghouse. She's in your space, she won't shut up, and the mother of all annoying things."

Number 5 - Invade personal space

"Women have this instinctive tick that makes them want to groom us anytime they want and make our personal belongings theirs. In other words, when they're not adjusting our tie for the umpteenth time, they're rummaging through our drawers, looking for a sweatshirt to change into. Am I the only one who sees a problem here? We all know that there would be hell to pay if we so much as thought about giving them a haircut or sorting through their stuff, so why is it that our turf is fair game?"

Number 4 - Become too emotional

"They cry over anything: a sad movie (or even a happy one), a broken nail, or a haircut gone awry. What's worse, they expect us to clean up the emotional mess. And if there's one thing we suck at, it's dealing with a crying woman on our shoulder. It's not that we're insensitive, but aside from saying, "There there, sweetie," we don't know the first thing about comforting a woman. The fact that women are usually more delicate and vulnerable is great; we just don't want the steady stream of tears for every minor setback."

Number 3 - Shop till you drop

"When it comes to shopping, there just aren't enough hours in the day for most women. Whether it's browsing, window-shopping, or an all-out spending spree, they can spend hours on end in a shoe store, among others, without even thinking about food, water, or any of their responsibilities. But what's worse is that they have to take us along for the ride. So there we go, from store to store, wandering aimlessly back and forth while they inspect every article of clothing by their respective price tags."

Number 2 - Talk incessantly

"Chris Rock nailed it when he said that asking how her day went renders a 45-minute conversation. Most women love to talk, and if you give them the ammo, they won't stop. It's not that we don't care about what they have to say; it's just that we don't need to hear every minute detail."

Number 1 - Use sex as a weapon

"In the war of the sexes, it's all about who wears the pants in the relationship. Often times most women, in an effort to show their superiority, will attack men's universal weak spot: sex. And while I applaud them for this gutsy tactic, they really should leave the basic human needs alone, don't you think?"

Shawn Croft concludes by saying this:

Learn to tolerate

"In the grand scheme of things, women's annoying habits aren't that bad. Chances are you'll adapt to them in time, as will she when it comes to your annoying tendencies. Nobody's perfect, and I think that's something we can all agree on."

Ladies, would you like to give reasons why SOME of us have SOME of these habits? :)

When it comes to figuring out men and women, we tend to stereotype each other, don't we? We all have our quirks and habits. As the author says, "Chances are, you'll adapt to them in time..." I believe there is always room for improvement but easier said than done.

Domestic Habits That Annoy Women.

In one of my previous postings, I mentioned about my revisit to a website that was my favourite back in 1999. Last night, after blog-hopping, I decided to go back there. I was in search of some thing I could blog about.

One thing that always intrigues me is human behaviour. I believe there is always a reason behind why people behave the way they do. So, as I browsed around articles relating to relationships, iVillage linked me to a website that brought me into a man's world. No. It was not a porn site. It was a website that deals with regular everyday issues. Some of them are issues that men in our lives seldom want to talk about. A few articles are answered seriously while the rest are handled playfully.

One article that caught my attention was about men's habits. Ryan Murphy at AskMen came up with Top 10 Domestic Habits That Annoy Women. He said:

"According to estimates, there are over 50 types of domesticated animals in the world. With enough training and patience, man might someday be one of them. When it comes to shacking up with our significant others, we almost invariably revert back to our primitive, knuckle-dragging ways. Maybe it's our way of silently protesting our captivity, or maybe it's just the way we're genetically programmed. Whatever the reason, we have a unique and sometimes gleeful way of irritating the ones we love most."

Here we go, the top 10 habits that annoy women ...

Number 10 - We leave a wake of empty containers

"While we have no problem taking out our trash, we will go to almost superhuman lengths to avoid having to fill them up in the first place. We'll pour water into near-empty shampoo bottles to maximize whatever's left; we'll leave behind a thimbleful of milk in the carton instead of throwing it out. Heck, we'll even leave a toilet paper roll with one square remaining and wipe with our shirts if we have to. So long as there's just a teeny, tiny bit left, we won't be the ones responsible for disposing of it and, more importantly, buying a replacement."

Number 9 - We splash the mirror when we brush our teeth

"Let's face it: We're territorial creatures at best. If it were socially acceptable, we'd pee on all of our possessions just to scare away other men (maybe not on our supply of beer, but you get the idea). Therefore, leaving behind a little white glob of toothpaste after we've brushed is just our way of marking our territory. It says, "I've been here and I'm cavity-free."

Number 8 - We leave hair in the sink after shaving

Why do they do this? The author says this: 'While we might like the result of a clean, smooth face, all men hate the actual process of shaving. It's time-consuming, painful and a miserable way to start the day. Therefore, as a sign of protest, we elect to leave our pesky little beard trimmings in the sink to show 'em who's boss. Women might hate it, but it's our way of celebrating victory in the battle against unwanted follicles."

Men with beard or goaties? They still need to do some kind of upkeep. Yah! We are going to find some kind of hair in the sink. By the way, I find my hair there too. The difference is, I clean up after myself.

Number 7 - We use 10 drinking glasses a day instead of one

"When asked about his habit of taking baths, Winston Churchill once replied, "Why stand when you could sit?". The same rationale applies to the use of multiple glasses. Why use the same dirty, germ-ridden glass time after time when you could enjoy a crisp, sanitized one whenever you like? Not only is it healthier, but using different glasses for every drink helps us calculate if we've consumed our recommended eight daily doses of water. Besides, what fun is there in having possessions if you never use them?"

Luckily, my signficant other does not do this. He uses one mug for coffee, and one glass for other beverages. The glasses in my cabinet are under-used! Not complaining here.

Number 6 - We pee on the toilet seat

"Granted, this is one of our least pardonable offenses, but it wouldn't have to be if women simply left the toilet seat up in the first place. Ladies claim that it's good etiquette to leave the seat down, but the opposite is actually true. Consider this: Since women need to sit down to relieve themselves, it's easy for them to bring the seat down with them in one fluid motion. We men, on the other hand, have to bend down, lift the seat, begin peeing, and then bend down again to return the seat when we're done. We go to the washroom to pee, not to perform calisthenics."

It is not a problem with me. When I need to use the toilet, I will put the seat down myself. That way, it saves me the trouble of wiping the seat.

Number 5 - We litter the ground with laundry

"A place for everything and everything in its place," they say. Well, that's a nice idea, but who has the time? It's far more fun to throw our clothes here and there as if a bomb went off in our closet. Not only is it faster to treat the floor like a giant laundry basket, but we can amuse ourselves for hours afterwards as we dodge and deke our fallen clothes while moving from room to room."

Some habits just can't be changed .... or can they?

I read a story about two college room mates - Jim was the neat one and Sam, the untidy one. Sam always left his clothes around. In the beginning Jim always picked up after Sam. One day, clearly exasperated from Sam's behaviour, Jim warned Sam that if he does not start picking up his clothes and putting them in its place, he is going to burn all of Sam's clothes. Sam thought Jim was joking and continued to leave his clothes where he took them off. The next day, after lectures, Sam found Jim standing in front of a bonfire, near their dorm. He asked Jim, "What cooking?" Jim answered, "Your clothes". That cured Sam's habit.

Number 4 - We don't do housework

"When it comes to home repairs and renovations, men are king. We're unequalled in our ability to fix basement steps, patch up aluminum siding and build spice racks. When it comes to cleaning, however, we're lowly paupers without the faintest inclination to pitch in. We'll lift our feet if we have to, and we'll even move the odd piece of heavy furniture, but our contribution ends there. Hey, if God had wanted us to sweep and dust, he would have given us feathers instead of fingers."

Number 3 - We burp & fart indiscriminately

"Scientists and academics often comment upon what a shame it is that we use only 10% of our brains. For most men, the same reasoning applies to our sphincters and throats. Like any other part of our body, these muscles need to be kept in shape. And there's simply no better way of doing it than burping the alphabet or heating up a "Dutch Oven" under the sheets. Women needn't be disgusted by our behavior. In fact, they should be flattered that we're comfortable enough around them to risk sharting ourselves. At the end of the day, isn't that what love is all about? "

Number 2 - We develop a martyr complex when we get sick

"When women get sick, they take the appropriate medicine and bivouac themselves in bed with a hot compress and a good book. When men get sick we go into a Shakespearian death throe, certain we're on the verge of sputtering out our last breath. We collapse wherever is convenient, be it on the bed or on the front lawn, and mutter, moan and groan until we've scared off every living creature (and turned on every male dog) in a six-mile radius. It's not subtle, but more often than not it gets us the attention we crave. "

.. And should a man find his unwell partner lying in bed reading a book or magazine, it doesn't mean she is feeling better. She could be waiting for the medicine to take effect.

Beware! Asking for anything at that moment may result in an end to some of your privileges.

Number 1 - We channel surf rapidly (and seemingly aimlessly)

"As King of the Castle, we consider it our right to rule the remote control with an iron fist. For women, that means having to watch an endless parade of sports highlights, monster movies and home renovation shows. Making matters worse is the lightning-fast speeds at which we flip through the channels -- so fast as to trigger epileptic seizures seven households away. Hey, it's not our fault there are 501 channels. "

Personally, I don't think this is the number 1 problem. Actually, it all depends on the woman who is reading it and what irks her the most. Regardless of what score this point deserves, I agree that this is one of the habits that annoy.

While most of these points are true, I don't believe that all men possess these habits. Everyone, men and women, are made up differently. No one is perfect. While some men uphold a few of these rituals, there is a fair share of them who don't. In fact, I dare say that some women have these habits too.

I think, as annoying as some of these habits are, some actually become a norm. If he does not keep up with a certain habit, his partner will think something is wrong.

Tagged... again

I have been tagged again ... This time it is from Lady Patsy. It is called the Hi-5 Meme.

Since I am still on a break (from writing original stuff), I am game for any tags. It does not drain energy from the flickering bulb in my head. Here goes....

5 things found in your bag

1. Wallet - I don't leave home without it.

2. Car keys and house keys - I don't have a driver and neither do I have a butler who opens my house door for me.

3. Handphone - so that I'm just a phone call or text message away.

4. Photos of loved ones - no, I don't carry an album, just a few selected photos.

5. Comb, lipstick palette, lipgloss - yet to put them in one pouch. Right now, it stays in one compartment of my bag.

5 favourite things in your room
(in the States, not here in Germany)

1. Musical keyboard - need music in my life, whether listening to it or playing it myself.

2. Magazines and books - need to read when there is nothing else on TV (yes, even with over 50 channels in the States, I get bored sitting down in front of the TV). Also, need to read something before sleeping.

3. Bag of cross stitch projects - when the mood hits me, I will stitch something for fun. I have put aside big projects for a while but they are just a stitch away to re-starting. hmm... about time I got down to the Last Supper portrait.

4. Bed - where sweet dreams keep me company ... oh yeah, and the other half sleeps there too. ;)

5. My closet - where I store my clothes, accessories, handbags, shoes and boots. I need more space!

5 things you’ve always wanted to do

1. Travel the world and live in communities for the real taste of a different life.

2. Travel to "interesting" places with Patsy anywhere in this world and tell of our adventures in a book.

3. Write about my life, experiences and family.

4. Work with missionaries to help less fortunate and teach their children. Education opens minds and hearts to many things.

5. Run my own or assist in running a shelter for troubled teenagers and/or abused women.

1. Blogging

2. Reading

3. Enjoying life

4. Learning new things

5 people you WANT TO tag

I won't tag anyone lest I get pelted with cyber-eggs. This is open to anyone who wants to pass on a tagging game. It is fun... try it.

Cracked Pot

A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water in his master's house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. "Why? asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?"

"I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said.

The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path."

Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure.

The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table. Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house."

**************************************************************************

This story has been in circulation for some years now and I never get tired of reading it. Each time I receive it, I am always reminded to appreciate the uniqueness in each person.

There is good in everyone ... even the ones we loathe. I am sure it is difficult to see the good in that person because we have already formed a negative opinion about him/her. Sometimes we forget that we possess flaws too, not just the person we dislike. No one is perfect. We are all cracked pots.

So, my fellow cracked pots, you have the potential to make flowers grow... and I don't mean by sowing your seeds! We can make a difference, no matter how small the deed - for even a drop of water encourages growth.
