Celebrations of Life and Love

In about a week, the world celebrates Valentine's Day. I do not really have fond memories of this day as a teenager or in my early 20s because I was a late bloomer. When there was someone in my life, it was never around February (talk about luck, huh?). :D

I told myself that someday when I do have someone to share the day with, it will be special. Well, it was - a long distance relationship which led to marriage. The distance did not make the day any less special. We exchanged gifts and cards via post and chatted online.

"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart." -Helen Keller

Almost 10 years later, we have settled into an understanding that we will not make a big deal out of Valentine's Day. Frankly, it has becomes so commercialised (like Christmas) that sometimes the true meaning of the day is lost.

I rather celebrate my birthday (which falls four days before cupid makes his appearance) because everyday is Valentine's Day to me (except the days when the love of my life should be sleeping with one eye open). :P

"Young love is a flame; very pretty, often very hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. The love of the older and disciplined heart is as coals, deep-burning, unquenchable. " - Henry Ward Beecher

So, what do we do on my birthday? If it is a week day, he goes to work and I go shopping! I treat myself to something nice and buy a cake from the bakery and wait for the weekend to celebrate my birthday with a meal.

Now, what would it be like if I were living in Malaysia? Then, I think it would be slightly different - a not-so-quiet affair. Family and some faithful friends will insist on getting together. This was the norm when I was single. We had a special meal at home and then when the weekend came around, the old faithfuls would choose a spot in K.L. to make it an evening of food, cake and booze. No, I did not touch the booze because I was always the designated driver (birthday or otherwise). The times when I did drink were the nights when I was guaranteed a safe ride home.

So, coming back to Valentine's Day, did you know that 188 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second-most popular greeting-card-giving occasion? (This total excludes packaged kids valentines for classroom exchanges.) (Source: Hallmark research)

JT, it has become so commercialised now.
I remember those schooldays when you found secret messages from secret admirers..and they were only written on scraps of papers.
Anyway, have a good time with your Valentine.

Hi Kak Teh

Yah, those were the days when things were simpler and little notes like that meant the world to the person who received it.

As the years passed, I found that almost everyone was jumping on the bandwagon with Valentine's specials. Suddenly it was so cool and special if you splurged on an expensive meal, $5 a stalk of rose, etc. :) It was not so fun for those who did not get a chance to be spoiled (ah! peer pressure). :P

You have a good time with your Valentine too.

Hi Mush

V day was never really fun for me too (as far as my memory can take me), as you have read, until I met Mitch. So we do have something in common.

Have fun celebrating your anniversary and love for Brecht. :)

Hugs

Hi JT, as the saying goes, 'early bird catches the girl', ha ha. Many happy returns of the day.
Enjoy the 365 days around the Sun.
Like a Chivas Regal, Your birthday means a Royal Salute.

Or as in Dom Perignon Champagne....it becomes a 'Cuvee'. Smooth, aromatic and beautiful sensation.

Happy birthday JT...and a sexy Valentine day to you too.
Have fun and rock 'em....May the Force be with you, Lee.

Valentine's Day is a few days before our wed ann, I told my hubs not to get me or do anything special for Valentine's. As you said, it's now very commercialized and so is every holiday celebrated by the humans! I rather spend quality time with hubs then spending money on a hiked-up price dinner.

Before I forget, Happy Birthday, JT! :)

Hi Lee,

Thank you very much for the creative and lovely birthday and Valentine wishes. :)

Hi Dawn

Thank you for the birthday greeting.

I agree that quality time spent with the husband is so much better than getting caught up with the commercialised celebrations. Dinners and flowers cost too much on the 14th (wait a day and the price is back to normal). Luckily most chocolate products have remained reasonably priced. And if we wait a week or so, the stores put it up for sale/clearance. :P (I am always looking for ways to save).

Enjoy your Valentine's day with hubby and Happy Anniversary.

Hi Lee

I am doing good. Keeping myself busy with housework and hobbies - mostly online in Facebook. :D

I took away my profile picture because I got tired looking at myself. hahaha
Actually, I just wanted a different look. I will probably put one later. For now, I like it this way.

Thanks for dropping by. Appreciate your visit. Take one ice coffee for the road. :)
