The Lady's Visit - Part 3 of 3

Next morning, Pat and I headed out to San Antonio. Since it was a two-hour drive from Marion's place, we decided to break our journey by visiting my sister in law, Susan and her husband, John. They live south of Austin. Her son, Jason, and his family were in town and so was Benny, John's brother.

After lunch, we thanked Susan, hugged and kissed everyone good bye and parted ways. With the help of the GPS, I found my way into San Antonio's famous downtown area. I took the first available parking lot. (I did not want to waste time looking for more parking lots when we could be walking around looking at stuff).
Pat slotting our parking fee into the box at the lot.
On our way to The Alamo, I noticed that there were many empty shop lots. I wondered if they went out of business (or some did not want to attempt to open any) with the Riverwalk Mall around the corner. It is a pity because I feel little specialty shops add charm to a historic area. Besides, it would be nice to have some shops within reach from the parking lot - last minute shopping or a place to snack before hitting the road.
Anyway, here are some pictures taken at The Alamo, used as a fortress in the 19th century and was the scene of several military actions, including the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, one of the battles between the forces of the Republic of Texas and Mexico.
We also took the Riverwalk cruise and saw much of downtown from there. Our guide was very entertaining while giving us a brief history of San Antonio and what it had to offer.
By the way, I have a brother in law, living in San Antonio. Despite the horrendous traffic that was building up on a Friday evening (where does it not build up in cities of this world?), he made his way to The Alamo to meet us.
Mark unaware that I took his photo while he was sorting out business (work never ends)
Pat posing under the statue of Davy Crockett. He was an American folk hero, served in the Texas Revolution, and died at the age of 49 at the Battle of the Alamo. To know more about Davy Crockett, read here.
After we left San Antonio, we stopped at Susan's house to pick up my sunglasses which I had left behind. When we arrived at Marion's place at 9:40pm, she said that we had missed a bad storm. In fact, they were getting ready to take cover from a hurricane. It would have been scary if we were closer to her area an hour earlier. That made me realise that some things just happen for a reason. Our delay due to my forgotten item could have saved us from untold danger.
We left for home next morning thanking Marion for her wonderful hospitality. It was also a morning of promises - that we will meet again and that Pat will not sleep on the long road trip (she was sleeping in the back seat of Marion's car the night we went to Austin). Pat was a good sport (thanks!). I don't mind talking to Peanut, my dog, but a one-way conversation can get dull.
The day before Pat left for Malaysia, we had lunch at the Wagon Master Steakhouse. We filled up on barbecued ribs, mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. We wished we could have relaxed after that but we had something important to do - pack Pat's bags. We had less than 12 hours before leaving the airport.

It was a thrill to have Pat with me, my first Malaysian visitor in the States. A holiday to remember, for sure. I told her that the next time she returns to visit me, I may have to change our mode of transportation (horses, dear?). She was surprised to see how much we pay for gas (or petrol in other parts of the world). Well Pat, if you think what we paid was a lot, this is how I feel with this week's prices ....

wow, it's a nice trip..hopefully i can go a trip soon
Hi J.T.,
Nice pictures. I still yet to visit Texas where my inlaws are. They are in New Braunfels, I think about 1 hour from St. Antonio? My hubby said it's one beautiful city. He likes it there and have thoughts of moving to Austin but I'm saying No! It will be too hot for me.
How was the temperature when you and Lady Patsy wre there? Was it muggy?
Hi JT, WOW! The Alamo! Beautiful pics, JT. I have seen that John Wayne movie so many times....practically learned the song, "Greenfields.." by heart too.
Yes, I will visit the Alamo and Texas one of these days.
Love that pic of the statues.
Wonder which one is Jim Bowie?
JT, you sure look real cool in the pics. Your friends too. But, ahemmm, that red dress on the right sure is something. Very distracting! Ha ha.
Seeing your gas prices...and me with my Lincoln T/C, ha ha....but again. looking on the bright side, the absolutely stunning Persian lady cashier at the station I pop in makes me ignore the gas bill when I sign for it, ha ha. Better admire her than seeing what I just paid for....it's $1.24 a litre here. And my Lincoln yum sengs 78 litres!!!
You think a bicycle might be the way to go? Arhaaa ha ha.
Give my best 'woof, woof' to Peanuts, and keep that smile, JT, Lee.
Hi Hazel
I am sure you will. And when you do, enjoy yourself. :)
Hi Dawn
Oh yes, New Braunfels is around San Antonio (saw road signs). I think after being in a place that is cold most of the year (and you like it), you may not enjoy the south.
It was not so muggy a month back but it has changed. I prefer to stay indoors now. If I have yard work, I do it before noon or after 7:00pm. Now I wish summer was over. :)
hahaha. i second that feeling!
Hi Lee
You know, I don't remember that song "Greenfields" because I hardly watched or watch old western movies. The only western TV shows I remember watching are Cheyenne, Bonanza and Rawhide.
I did not notice the name Jim Bowie at The Alamo, mainly because I am not well versed with the history. I looked up Bowie's background - he definitely died there.
Thanks for the compliments about my profile pic ... again. Red's my colour. ;)
$1.24 a litre for petrol in Toronto ... With this week's prices, we are paying more over here. They say the prices are holding steady at the moment but I won't be surprised if it goes up in a few weeks. It is time to get my tiny car again (Smart) for running around town. I liked using it in Germany. :) It gave me good mileage.
You take care now. Peanut says "woof woof" to you.
Cheers!
Excellent post, my friend, excellent!
Nice photos, nice persons and nice colors.
Happy week.
Hi chweetheart,
Thanks for blogging about my holidays ... he he he. And thanks for packing my bags for me as well ... you're such a dear. Did enjoy my holidays with you and am looking forward to another one next year ... hopefully :)
Hi Jacqui,
Lovely pictures. Saw some on FB too. :)
I like the last picture. The fuel price hike will kill us too. :(
Hi Farina
I take it that price of gas in the O.C. is not favourable either. :) Has it reached $5.00 a gallon?
Hello David
Thank you for dropping by again, my friend, and for the lovely compliments.
You have a happy week too. :)
Hi Patsy
It was a pleasure, my dear. And next year, if I am in a different location, it will be time to explore again. If I am still here, then we have to plan to go somewhere when I visit home again. :)
Hi Rashi
Thanks. How are you keeping?
The fuel price hike seems to be a pain to everyone now. Everything is affected by it - food, travel, etc.
I can complain about what we are paying but I don't envy what Europeans are forking out for one litre. Crazy compared to what I paid back in 2001 when I lived in Germany.
Hey Jacqui,
Whoa...Looks like Pat really had a good time and you really packed in one heck of a trip for her! Lucky her...=)
This part of the account looks very rustic and colonial. You know, wooden buildings, rifles, barrels etc...Very cowboy-ish and Texan...Nice!
Gives you this very homey feeling...
PS: I think you look swell in baby-tees ;)
JT, nice pictures. It is always lovely to have some one dear paying us a visit. I always look forward to my Sis's visit, or even my parents's.
jt
I am some weeks behind and had to read all three posts in one go.
Enjoyed the three posts very much. Felt as if I was there with you and Pat.
Would love to follow ULee to Hooters when I am in the US one day. Need you ULee around to restrain me when the chicken wings are served on me lest I may get choked up on the bones.
Thnks for the great read.
Hey Daphne
I had more plans for Pat but there was only so much we could do in such a short time and we did not want to pack too much in like those guided tours. :)
After moving around in Texas, I realised I miss living in that state. There is something homely about that state.
Thanks for the nice compliment. ;)
Hello Aiyah Nyonya
It is true, isn't it, that when someone dear visits you, it is always extra special.
Thanks for the compliments on the pictures. :)
Hi Zawi
Glad you made it to my blog and enjoyed the read.
I think I may need extra help with me at Hooters. Not only will we need to restrain you, I will need help with ULee too. hahaha (Lee, just joking ok?)
You keep well, now.
hi dear :
long time since I pop over to you , wooo you and pat did had a wonderful holiday , when I look at all those lovely picture, it make me really wanted to move to USA :)
I show Derek ... if we do move to USA there do have lot of place to visit during the stay and we don't even need to go holiday in EURO anymore hehehe.
you look so lovely and chil my dear .
is so wonderful to have friend or family come over for a visit .
have a lovely Sunday xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx oppps ! IN UK the GAS /petrol price is more then USA ..... we are now pay £1.20p per litl gosh ....... 5 years ago I full up my tank is only cost me £20 now I need to pay £35 holy sugar wish my salary will go up like this hehehehehehh.
JT, not yet but im sure it willl very very very soon. nowadays the cheapest is 4.35. Mostly at 4.47 so we'r looking at maybe less than a month time. :((
The horse-drawn carriage looks interesting... maybe to save on petrol we should start using these carriages.
Imagine going to work in a....
"Kereta lembu... dari Melaka...
ditarik pula oleh... LEMBU PERKASA!"
Hehehe...
Hi Pearly dear
Thank you for the compliments. Appreciate it very much.
Do you and Derek have plans (or planned) to move to the States? Both Europe and US have their own attractions. If you have seen most of Europe already, then maybe it's time to move. :D
Wow.. £1.20p per litre is a lot to pay. I guess it would not be too bad if they are increasing salaries too but that is not the case. So, now we suffer with rising cost and stagnant pay. Terrible!
You take care Pearly and have a good week.
Farina,
Goodness gracious ... $4.35 - $4.47 in your area. We just touched $3.95 - $4.05 in ours. Yup, I won't be surprised if we see $5.00 per gallon by 4th of July.
I wonder why the people concerned are not increasing production when they can see this problem is hurting the world. sigh
Hi Pi
hahaha... I guess that will be the way to go someday. We will be back to square one - horse drawn carriages, horse back riding, kereta lembu (and this time it won't be an insult when you call them lembu drivers), bicycles. When people go to work, instead of car parks, now they will have to have lembu lots with poles to tie the lembus and have drainage system in the parking lots to wash away the dung. :D
night life is also totally out for me especially when you have inquisitive kids to show good example to. those partying days are so over..
enjoyed reading yr road trip with yr best friend. and yr brother in law looked kinda cute too *i can't believe i just said that*
Hi Jt,
Like Pak Zawi, I had to read all 3 posting in one go. Very interesting and Pat is so lucky to have you as the host.
Anyway, been to Hooters when we went for holiday in Gold Coast, Australia. I agree with you. Men definitely don't go there for the food. :)
Hi Jacqui ... I have not been to the places you & Pat visited, so enjoyed tagging along visually. Thank you!
Peanut must have had a ball too. Dogs are such great fun on a trip. Has he started his own blog??
I have another question. Is it considered rude to ask to use one's host bathroom immediately on arrival? I don't mind my guests doing that and have done it a few times. Blush.
Hi KC
Actually it is kinda nice to know that we have moved on from those partying days - life goes on, new experiences to conquer. We need to move on too besides trying to show good example to impressionable kids. :)
Partying till wee hours of the morning is rare now... just very special occasions (and usually I pay the price for going to bed very very late).
Oh yes.. I agree with you, that dude is good looking. :P (Pat thought so too).
Hi Nana
Were the Hooters waitresses blond? Most of the girls at the one we went to were blond. Although they were had varying shades of blond. :)
Thanks for dropping by. It has been a while since I visited your blog - been caught up with lots of activities.
Take care, Nana.
Hi Rita
Before Pat came to the States, I had those places in mind (in Texas) to visit. So I thought that it will be a good opportunity for me to see it since I have company.
Oh yeah, Peanut loves car rides but after a while, he tends to settle down and sleep. He is fun to have in the car, though. Peanut has not started his blog ... yet. Just like his momma (me), he gets caught up with other things or just does not know what to write about. :)
By the way, I don't think it is rude to ask to use the bathroom upon arrival. I was just shy and figured if I could use the bathroom before, I would. If someone came to my place to visit and needed the bathroom immediately, I would have no qualms about it. By all means, one has to answer to the call of nature. :) I would hate to put someone in an uncomfortable position.
I am glad you enjoyed my posts. Thank you.
Take care, Rita.
dear JT;
dont mind me to break in..
impressionable kids - thats the word i've been looking for. yeah, parents have to show good example to their children or else suffer the consequences *chuckles*
cheers!
Hi KC
Nice to see you again. Don't have to ask ... come back anytime. :)
Kids' minds are like sponges and as they grow older some tend to emulate their parents' actions. Some habits are good and parents can be proud of it but some, as you say, suffer the consequences. ;)
JT - Wow! The Alamo ... saw the movie, read the history. But there's nothing like being there in person. As for those Gas prices - hah hah! Will be using my skate board to work soon.
Hi TH
You are absolutely right - there is nothing like being there in person. I felt the same way when I visited Mozart's museum in Salzburg - watched the movie about his life and works, listened to his music and studied about him. It was "wow!" to me. :)
Anyway, reports show that most Americans are overweight. Maybe the ever rising gas prices will get some into cycling and walking (and skate boarding - like you intend to.. hah hah) to get back to good health.
In adversity there is opportunity. :)
