Tagged - Favourite Foods
Zawi of Life As I See It has tagged me. It is a Ramadhan Tag about food. He commented in his blog that even though this is a Ramadhan tag, he thinks non-muslims can be tagged too since they too form a sizable group of customers at Ramadhan bazaars. It has nothing really to do with religion, just the food. How true!
I was in Malaysia during Ramadhan last year and boy! was I glad to be home then. I visited the bazaars and filled up on foods which I missed since leaving Malaysia. Taking an evening stroll with my brother through those bazaars made me miss my mom even more. For as long as I can remember, she looked forward to the Ramadhan months. She loved food - all kinds of food. She especially loved Malay cakes. Whenever she telephoned me during the fasting month, she always reminded me of the days when we used to load up on the goodies from the bazaars. That is when I start craving badly for local delicacies all over again.
So, here goes ....
NAME 5 FAVOURITE FOOD THAT YOU FEEL LIKE HAVING NOW
3. Nasi kerabu
4. Roti tisu
5. Mee jawa or bandung
NAME 5 FOOD YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE FOR BREAKFAST IF YOU COULD
2. Pulut hitam
3. Pulut panggang
4. Durian in santan (coconut milk)
5. Pulut inti
NAME 5 FOOD YOU WOULD MOST LIKELY BUY FOR BERBUKA TODAY
(If I were in Malaysia today, this what I would likely buy for dinner)
(If I were in Malaysia today, this what I would likely buy for dinner)
1. Ayam percik
3. Coconut jelly
4. Roti jala and rendang
5. Fried popiah
NAME 5 FAVORITE BEVERAGES YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE FOR BERBUKA OR SUPPER TODAY
2. Soya bean milk (and some curd to go with it)
3. Iced tea
3. Iced tea
I cannot think of any beverages that I would like today but ice kacang dessert sounds good right now. (Lady Patsy made me think about it for days since she spoke so passionately about it in her previous post).
This is only just a sampling of what I would really like but I know once I am in Malaysia and I see the varieties, some of my choices may change. Right now, it is a case of "out of sight, out of mind".
Before I end this, here's wishing all my muslim friends and bloggers Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Woke up for sahur and immediately after finishing it switched on the pc and suspecting that you have done you tag, I came straight to your site. I tagged two non Malays to see how they would respond as to the choice of food, hoping to see in yours a mention of some semblance of Indian food like maruku ora murtabak which is available at Ramadhan bazaars.
You are as Malaysian as any of us and your choice of food reflect that. I guess being denied of your favourite food by being away from home really made you crave for them.
Let us see how the other non moslem's choice of food goes.
Thanks for doing the tag.
Hi JT,
Nice food list u got there....:)
Mee Jawa and Satay....one of my fav food.
hehe...take care now..cheers.
I love love love pulut hitam :) butthe ones sold at pasar ramadhan can get a lil watery so I usually cook myself :)
N'way Selamat Hari Raya to you and your family :)
Hi J.T.
This post makes me drool! I, too, love buka puasa food. The ayam percik is one of my favorites. It's been so many years since I experience Raya. This coming trip I hope hubby will be adventurous to eat all the ethnic food we have in Ipoh. Thanks for the post. Yummy!
JT,
I will be cooking rendang daging and rendang ayam for raya. Nanti I'll eat for you, okay? :) (already in Raya mood... my office closes for one whole week next week)
Dear JT,
Even though you are far away from home, your choices of food are truly Malaysian. As Zawi commented above, you are as Malaysian as any one of us here.
I notice that you like pulut... hehehehe. When I saw you mentioned Durian in santan, I guess it's to be eaten with pulut as well, right? Hmm.. I wonder where can I get that. I'm salivating now. :)
By the way, kueh tako is slightly different than tepung pelita. Kueh tako has bits of water chestnut inside. Both are very yummy.
I was invited to a buka puasa session in Sheraton Subang last week and I can tell u, the buka puasa food there was soooo fantastic!
when i visit those food bazaar during puasa month, i usually look out for the cucuk udang...my fav!
Wahhh.. You know alot of Malaysia food.. welcome to malaysia next time...
Between, first time here..
I haven't had satay since the ramadhan month started. Now I'm craving for it. That picture of satay looks really good. Yummyyyyy..
I'll still be working till Friday but at the moment I don't have any motivation to work. Already in the raya mood.
JT :o)
mmmmmm ... What a delicious list of food :o)
I'm excited about raya but terrified at the same time. really need to be careful not to blow off my diet.
take care JT :o) miss ya!
Oh the food you listed sounds simply delicious.. though I'm not far away from home (in fact I am where the food is) I look forward to the bazaar ramadhan.
Come back soon.. we'll go makan makan some satay at our regular spot!!
Wow...thankfully I was just in Malaysia not too long ago...otherwise I'd be drooling! :P I've never heard of "durian in santan" though...do they just put durians in the santan or is it cooked? (I'm guessing the latter...)
The phrase "coconut water" sounds pretty strange...I've never used it in English! It was always either "air kelapa" or the direct translation in Hokkien.
Hi JT,
Goodness gracious me! You know that dessert 'pelita'..ha ha. Very Malaysian indeed.
Thank you for the Raya wish. So sweet. take care.
Hi Zawi
Strangely enough, Indian food does not come to my mind first. I have seen murtabak at the bazaars but have only bought it once or twice. I usually buy it because one of my brothers like it.
Yes, you are right. Being away does make me crave for the ones I listed. Of course, my list can go on and on. :)
Thanks for the tag. It was fun.
Hello Nightwing
After making this list, I had an urge to buy myself a ticket to fly back home ... just so that I can get to taste them again. :)
You take care too.
Hello Frankensteina
Welcome to my blog.
I don't think I ever bought pulut hitam from the pasar malam. You are right, it can be watery. On this list, I put it as one of the foods I would love to have for breakfast. My mom usually cooked it for me. Whenever we had left overs (from tea time), I would have that for breakfast the next day. :)
Thanks for dropping by.
Hi Dawn
I love ayam percik so much that whenever I am down for a holiday, as soon as Tuesday comes around, my brother will offer to take me to the pasar malam so that I can get my fix! haha
Judging from your previous posts (about the Asian dishes you cook), I believe your husband will enjoy the ethnic foods. He sounds adventurous.
Here's wishing you a good holiday.
Hi Pi
Oh yumm ... rendang daging and ayam. Make sure you eat plenty for me! (making me hungry lah)
Anyway, Selamat Hari Raya to you. Enjoy your break. You deserve it. :)
Dear Nana
Actually I have never eaten durian with pulut. I wouldn't mind trying that, if I can get my hands on some. :)
My mom used to put durian in bubur kacang hijau. oh yummylicious!
Thanks for clarifying the difference between tepung pelita and kueh tako. With or without the bits of chestnuts, I agree that the taste is simply delicious.
I miss the bazzars in Malaysia too. Those in Geylang is so commercialize. And I still prefer the food back home.
Singapore's Ramadan bazzar is blek !
JT, we'l be celebrating raya with other msian on sat oct 13 for the raya prayer and makan2! Apparently there's a couple of groups here in oc. sorry for not being active these last few days. sgt busy. will resume after raya. ;)
Hi Sharlydia
Welcome to my blog.
Now that you mention it, cucuk udang is another thing that I would usually buy whenever I am home - not just during Ramadhan month but anytime of the year. I love to have that during tea time.
Yummy ... :)
Anyway, thanks for dropping by. Appreciate it.
Hi Keeyit
Welcome to my blog.
I know about Malaysian food because I am Malaysian. :) I miss it a lot too. I could cook some foods at home but somehow when someone else prepares them for me, it tastes better. :D
Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate the visit.
Hello Trueblue
I can imagine the mood in the country this week. Kind of miss that too. That feeling of a holiday in the air ... plus less traffic! :D
Hope you get your satay fix soon. I know I will have to wait for mine till the next time I return home.
Take care and Selamat Hari Raya.
Hi Syana
Hey you!!! Long time no see.
I am sure you will do very well with sticking to your diet plan. Don't worry dear... enjoy yourself.
While writing this, I am thinking of serunding and lemang! I have some serunding at home but I have to forego the lemang part. Oh well.. I have to be thankful for that. :)
Miss you too and take care. Wishing you a joyous and blessed Hari Raya.
Gwendolyn... Is that you Gwen Lewis??
If you are the Gwen I mentioned ... for sure, I will never miss our satay night feed.
We probably have to go more than once. :D
Hi WP
I am not sure if there are other ways to make durian santan. The way that I like is when the santan is cooked a little (with some sugar and a pinch of salt), then I add the durians before eating.
As for the word "coconut water", I used that word since I discovered the soothing cool and sweet taste of it (from childhood). Of course, if I were to buy it from one who does not speak English, I will say "air kelapa". :)
Hi Ruby
I think I am a little bit more Malaysian than some perceive me to be. Though, I admit I am totally useless at remembering names of some dishes. I need help there! :)
Thanks for dropping by, Ruby. Wishing you a great week ahead and once again ... a wonderful Hari Raya.
Hello Aiyah Nyonya
It is interesting to know that the Singapore Ramadhan bazaars are nothing much to shout about. I have never been to one but I would like to believe that the Malaysian ones offer more than just a thousand varieties of food - it is a feeling of home. :)
Hello Princess Farina
Glad to know that you will have a little bit of "home" in the O.C. It nice to be able to celebrate something we are used to in Malaysian style. Wishing you a great time there.
I hope when you resume blogging, I will not have problems going into your blog, like I mentioned in my email. Looking forward to reading more of your posts.
Take care and Selamat Hari Raya to you and Michael.
just seeing ur list make me hungry j.t! gee wish im home now..if i go home for holiday, i'm sure i'm going to be putting on tons of weight! hahaha
u hv a great week!
Aiseh babe..all the food making you've mentioned making me hungry lar..If I start about Malaysian food...it will take me all nite..
But yes, the food we have back home is seriously so yummy..*drool* (melissa wipes drool)..
Jacqui ... I agree with everyone, yours is a true Malaysian tag. One can tell you love coconut. I am a freak for it, so I immediately noticed that every category of your food choices has a dish with coconut flavor. :)
Hi Winnie
You are in good company. Whenever I go home, I never leave the country lighter - always heavier (in personal weight and luggage). :D But I don't mind about my weight because for the rest of the year, I eat in moderation and hope the weight evens out. hahaha
You have a great week too.
Hi Melissa
We do have some seriously yummy food at home. Now that we are living overseas, we really start appreciating them.
Now, we either have to make it ourselves at home or crave for it until we go home the next time. :)
Hello Rita
That was very observant of you. I did not realise it until you pointed out that my dish choices have coconut flavour in them.
Yes, I do love coconut ... the taste but I am not a fan of coconut fragrance (like in shampoo). :)
Keep well, Rita.
Hey JT,
Sorry it took me so long to come back here...
Remind me never to drop by your blog at this time of the day and the chances that I would end up getting hungry is very high ;)
For me, I personally love Rendang ayam and daging...I also love the Malay soup!
This is going to be a sad Raya for me...Have been having so much work to do that I have actually opted to stay in Penang during the short 3 day hols to catch up on some sleep, instead of stuck on the bus!
Oh well, hopefully I will return a little fresher!
You take care there k?
Hey JT,
I'd like to wish everyone Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri too.
I couldn't follow most of the items on your list. May be they just have different names there. The kababs (minced meat cutlets), biryani (rice cooked with goat meat/chicken), and phirni (dessert) here are yummy.. :)
Hey Daphne
You made a wise choice opting to stay back in Penang during the holidays. I am not sure if services have improved since the mid-90s but I remember making a mistake going to Melaka during Hari Raya holidays one year. I could not get a direct bus from Klang to Melaka. I had to stop in Seremban and then wait for about 2 hours for a connecting bus ... that too I had to stand for a while until some kind boys took their bags off the middle seat (last row) for me. Every time the bus braked, I had to hold on to the seats on the side so that I don't get hurled down the aisle! :D
Anyway, with some quiet time to yourself, you might get a lot done. All the best.
P.S. You read my blog, get hungry and still can get your fix - you're in Malaysia. I write my blog, get hungry, crave and crave for them and then let it go. I can't get most of the food on my list where I live. Sometimes I wish I had to power to blink myself from country to country. I will certainly save on plane tickets for sure. haha
Hey Rashi
I do apologise if you were not able to follow most of the items on my list. If you would like to know more about them, just list them down and email me, I will try my best to explain what they are. :) (and I also invite others to email me if they not familiar with the foods I listed here)
I am familiar with kababs and biryani (yummy!) but am not sure what is phirni (dessert). What ingredients are used to make phirni?
You keep well, Rashi and have a great weekend.
Ohh.. you are malaysian.. Oopss.. But your name is different than malaysian.. hehe..
Hi Keeyit
Oh yes ... my name. That's cos' I am Eurasian/Serani. Most Eurasians in Malaysia have western names. :)
Cheers! (we tend to drink a lot too! haha)
I would have chosen all Malaysian foods too. They are just too yummy. I wish I'm in Malaysia now and get invited for open house.
OMG all those food you like I love it too , I do wish I am home too .
Hi Bee
Tell me about it. I too wish I was back in Malaysia. I miss the open house visits. By the time I get to the third house, I am usually filled up with yummy Hari Raya food. After that it is just sitting around and chatting and having drinks and sampling all the different cookies. :)
Have a great weekend, Bee.
Hi Pearly dear
You're back!!! yippee. :D
As I write this, I am imagining the mood on Hari Raya morning. Next thing, my mind goes to all the scrumptious food most homes serve - rendang, roti jala, curry, serunding.. oh! the different cookies too.
Someday I will have to try and make it home during Hari Raya again. I experienced Chinese New Year in Malaysia early this year. It was good and I had my fill of Yee Sang! :)
You are right about feeling at home. The orderly'ness in Singapore do kill some of the festivities atmosphere of the main festivals.
