Sizzling Satay and Steak
I was looking for something to blog about. Then, I remembered Nyonya Penang's posting about her favourite food . The tag was left opened.

I always miss Malaysian food, particularly satay - my all-time favourite. Of course, I will not refuse other local delicacies but satay is always the first thing I buy on the first night home in Malaysia. I will continue eating satay, at least, once a week while I am there. Oh! the aroma while it is being grilled is just glorious.
For the benefit of international readers, satay is a dish consisting of chunks of dice-sized meat (commonly chicken, beef or mutton) on skewers, which are grilled over charcoal fire, then served with a spicy peanut sauce dip, slivers of onions, cucumber and ketupat.
Satay is a special treat to me now since I don't get it overseas. Rather, I don't live close enough to a good Malaysian restaurant in Germany.
My other favourite food is grilled ribeye steak. I take my steak medium-rare. So juicy. yumm...
Although I grill ribeyes at home, I will not turn down a good feast at a steak restaurant - anywhere in this world.
The rib eye, or ribeye, also known as the Delmonico steak or Scotch fillet (Australia) is a beef steak from the small end of the rib roast. When cut into steaks, the rib eye is one of the most popular, juiciest, and expensive steaks on the market. Meat from the rib section is tender and fattier (the meat is said to be "marbled") than other parts of the beef carcass. This extra fat makes rib eye steaks and roasts especially tender and flavorful. The rib eye is sometimes served bone-in, particularly at high-end steakhouses. The extra moisture and fat alongside the bone is said to enhance the flavor, which is rich and somewhat sweet.

I did try it before but nothing like someone else grilling it over charcoal for me. hehe
For some reason, it just tastes better in Malaysia. :)
Having said that, I still have a packet of the satay seasoning and satay sauce in my pantry. I will have to use it one of these days before it expires. :)
I love satay too, hmm the peanut sauce is so good!
One of my French friend who came to Malaysia with us has peanut allergy. Poor guy he can just look at us eating.

I love the sauce on its own sometimes. yummm..
Other times, I drown the ketupat in it. haha
Hello JT, Satay ayam, satay daging? I love them too, and ketupat, onions and cucumbers.
I have tried satay from Kangar up North to Kota Bahru to JB, Singapore and of course Kajang satay, even Betong and Gua Musang...love them all.
And steak? Love T-bone. Prefer well done though. But old days would go for Kobe steak....THE BEST! (Makes a big hole in pocket same time)
Btw, I love German saukruat too (not sure of spelling).
But whatever, I am still an old fashion rice man. No rice tiga hari....ada lecheh sikit, ha ha. Lee.

Before I forget, I luv those pic of lovely & mean machines. Did they (hope your friend is getting better) really offer them for you to test drive? Grab it fast! You mignt not have another chance.

Your satay experience is incomplete unless you've tried all sort of satay - rabbit anyone? Satay kajang is getting more & more expensive these days - 60sen for 4 small bits of meat! (cannot say chunks)
I never had a good steak so far - more into chicken chops.
Received those liquor chocs as gifts - sadly, had to give them away.
I just notice that there's actually steps to follow in tagging - previously i only kopipes the relevant bits -too lazy of me. So, cancellah this one -sory eh?
I miss satay as well!! But I'm going to be in Malaysia for 4 days in August - so I'll be eating away for 4 days non-stop ;-)

Rabbit satay! wow... never tried that one. I have tried rabbit tandoori, though. Delicious.

Oh goodness.. only 4 days in Malaysia. If I had only 4 days too, I would be stuffing myself all of those days. :D
I say JT, this is one of my favourite subjects on which I can go on forever, lets see, nasi lemak, roti canai, grilled octopus, japanese sotong balls, ramen, dim sum, cheesecake hmmmmm the only thing I don't like is onion - if visible, if blended into the food or made into onion rings its fine.
The best thing I had recently is my mother in laws mee kari - thick, aromatic and chockful with cockles, prawns, fish cakes, those tofu thingie, chicken pieces, greens with a squeeze of lime enjoyed on a cool rainy afternoon...hmmmm.

Never mind that.. at the mention of roti, I could feel the taste of my favourite roti tisu. I am now imagining sitting in Modern Restaurant (I think that is the name) in Klang where I get my mee bandung, mee hailam and mee jawa fixes, apart from chapati, tosai... oh yumm..
Thank goodness I made chicken kurma yesterday. Got the taste of home. :) Today, nasi lemak.

I love satay... and other local delicacies too. But I simply cannot take in too much food in one meal. My tummy capacity below 500cc... :) Going for buffet is definitely rugi lah! Might as well go for ala carte... or hmmm... maybe ala kadar sounds more like it.

ah...satay....don't think I have met any one who does not like satay. I take my satay straight from the stick without dipping it it the sauce. I then spoon the sauce into my mouth. Wah....it's lips-smacking good.
You unable to get frozen Malaysian satay from the stores over your place?
I love ribeye steak too; just had a sizzling and yummylicious meal 10 days back....I wiped the platters clean. Am sticking with medium-well, though.
I go slow on chocolates now.....body sending signals that it's not very agreeable with it.

You and I are the same. I love food but I cannot eat that much. I eat many small meals. Buffets - definitely a waste for me.
Hubby does not mind Malaysian food ... but only if he has no choice. haha

Wah! that is an interesting way you take your satay. And you are right...I don't think I have heard of anyone not liking satay. :)
I have not come across frozen satay. I am too far away from Asian stores. It takes me at least 2 hours to get to one. I did buy frozen durians, though.. in my previous location in Germany. I got it from a tiny Thai/Indo shop.
My cousin, in Munich, says she can get frozen roti chanai from an Asian shop near her place. Note to self: Visit her soon.
As for chocolates, I found that my stomach has less tolerance for milky ones. I have to take mine dark. However, nice little tummy has no complaints about the little shots of liquor going in. hahaha

Its Hokkien mee la with the keropok and all. Did you know that the National Press Club sold the best halal Hokkien mee from 1994 to 2003? Also the mutton fried rice at the Press club was to die for. Can't get it anywhere else. Check with ShanghaiS, Rockybru, Zorro, Nuraina etc etc.
I love msian foods, fruits and drinks. only a few days ago i was craving for ... sirap bandung!(im stil craving for syrup bandung tho) too bad they dontv syrup cordial here. sigh. but on the other hand, iv polished my cooking skill since i moved to the states so whenever i feel like having satay or nasi lemak or nasi briyani, all i have to do is cook them myself. ;)

Oh yeah.. I never did come across syrup cordial in the States. You can do it yourself....buy some rock sugar (if you can find it), dissolve by boiling it down with water - more rock sugar less water.. and put red food colouring. Home-made version that I know of. :)

I love satay to bits. Oh you poor one JT, being away and missing satay. Kalau in London I tau in China town they have frozen satay sold in the supermarkets. 'Brahims' I think. Quite ok. But in Germany..hmm. If you know any friends visiting Germany, order some dear. It should keep for the journey and you simply microwave the moment you received the pack at whatever time even at 4am...ha ha. I understand how you feel and I can understand, having stayed away before.
I am like you and Pi too. We don't eat, we peck like birds..he he. Got to have 5 small meals.
Gosh! I love food. Sashimi, mee rebus, laksa Penang, Gurney drive sotong bakar, Insaf's nasi beriani, soto, laksam, steak, ...I dunno why I bother to list...ha ha...too many lah JT. Now M'sia is rich with fusion culinary.
JT, I visited Frankfurt many moons ago and I enjoyed Nord Sea or s'thg like that. They had all kinds of fish served. It is a fast food outlet. I wish someone open one in malaysia.

The halal hokkien mee and the mutton fried rice is no longer available. It died with the passing of my brothers, Fredo and Domingo. They were the legend cooks who left their mark at NPC.
last week Malaysia and her grandma came to London - Covent Garden to be exact - and we had more than satay - satay with peanut gravy and doing the joget lambak in the summer afternoons - what a combination!
Now my bones are aching.

satay, my favourite, satay kajang coz the peanut sauce is served with extra hot sambal cili.... being abroad I've tried preparing satay by myself ,several times already... although the taste is away from the satay kajang, but still okay....(that's what my kids say..hehehe )
Satay...arrrghhhh it will never give me enough... the aroma, the tingling sweet and spicy sauce, the crunchy cucumber and the softness of the rice cake...wallaaa... nothing can beat satay lah.

Actually my dear, Tony (SUP) was the one responsible for getting me to blog. (in fact, I mention him in my next posting, which is almost ready).
I won't deny it, though, that Stephen was one of the first bloggers, along with Zorro and two others (Syana and KemalakBoy) who encouraged me on. I appreciated the motivation. You should read what Stephen said in his comments (first posting in March). That was a challenging motivation! :)
I wish I could have been at that gathering. I bet Zorro's stories and wit keeps anyone going for hours. Looking forward to meeting all of you one day. :)

Well, at least you have tried preparing satay yourself ... several times. Me? I don't mind but I prefer if someone else prepares it for me. Something about the joy of eating someone else's cooking. hehe
One thing I noticed ... children always give us a reason to try many things. My sister, who never liked cooking or stepping into the kitchen, has become the better cook. She comes up with many things to keep her children happy. :)

yum yum..rib eyes is fresh is definitely medium rare..but in m'sia the quality varies..so a medium is always on the cards..satay well is such an awesome m'sian snack tats available everywhere..just gorgeous

I agree with you about the freshness of the meat. It all depends. When I was living in Malaysia, I was taking my ribeyes medium well. But since living in the States and Germany, I began to like medium or medium rare. I don't think I will ever go rare. :)
