Weekend Dreams & Wishes

Some months back my brother was looking to upgrade his handphone (or handy as it is called in Germany). He did. That got me interested in finding out what models were there in the market today. The choices were so wide that I was left confused at the end of my search. Then, I realised this was all I needed in my handphone:

1. It has to function as a phone, obviously.

2. Text messaging functions - very important. My siblings in Malaysia rely on that function for quick messages. Cheaper than making phone calls. Also, they won't get stuck on the phone with me when I give them silly updates about my life over here. It is also very important for messaging Lady Patsy and Anne about some news - mainly about sizzling dudes who live around this area.

3. Camera. Do I really need it? I haven't used my phone to take any pictures since 2005. Then again, having a camera may be beneficial. After all, sometime last year, a lady used her mobile device to take a photo of a man 'yanking off' in the New York subway. Thoroughly offended with this lewd obscenity, she headed to the nearest police station, lodged a report and gave that short "movie clipping" of the man to the police, as evidence. He was later tracked down, apprehended and charged.

It is highly unlikely that I will come across some horny fellow but if I spot a nice looking dude, I could share that photo with my girlfriends. OK, so camera included.

That's it. That is all I need. Looking at my current phone which I have used since early 2004, I thought, "why waste money? My phone is still working fine. No need to change it now. I can wait till it kaputs on me."

Remember when most of us did not have to or need to carry a handphone? No one could track us down or leave irritating messages on our phone. Pagers were good devices. We could always tell the caller later, "no phone around to return call".

I tried, as long as I could, not to carry a handphone when I was working in Malaysia. I finally gave in when I was delayed one evening, for 3 hours, in a train from KL to Port Klang. "Masalah teknikal", the KTM conductor said. Sure, sure... the way it kept stopping every now and then, I wondered if they owed anything to Tenaga Nasional Berhad. Needless to say, mum was worried. There was no way I could get to a phone booth. Luckily, there was a nice Punjabi man who offered his handphone. That kind gentleman kept himself occupied throughout our stop and go journey by chatting up three Chinese girls standing near him. After 1.5 hours, the girls asked him if they could use his phone to call their parents. He agreed. I happened to be in the vicinity when he saw me looking longingly at his phone (not him!). That is how he extended the kind offer for me to call home.
I did not like carrying my first handphone. It was heavy and ugly. A device meant only to make and receive calls. No such thing as text messaging and taking photos. It took up a lot of my handbag's space. It was not long before I decided to get a bigger bag (good excuse to shop for a new one) so that I could throw in my travel companions too - a current novel and my most trusted folded umbrella - shelter when it rains; a weapon, if accosted (thankfully, I never needed to use it for this purpose). We have certainly come a long way with phones. My mobile device now fits in my palm.

On my previous trips back to Malaysia- in the past five years, I've noticed that Malaysians are just handphone-crazy. Practically everyone owns one... or two.. or three. Now, a ride in the train is not without the sounds of some handphone going off. There are hardly any classic ring tones being used today. We are now serenaded with tunes. As soon as the train heads closer to a main station, the phones come alive. Voices get louder with remarks such as "yah, it's me. I am in Subang oledy. Going to pick me up or not?" or "dei! I am in Klang. Where you standing? Near the machines ah?" Oh... and my favourite, "aiyoo, I miss my stop. You wait there, ok. I will take the next train back to where you are waiting. So tired lah today."
In Germany, I set my phone to play some classical music (lately, just a classic ring tone) . However, when I am in Malaysia, my phone is put to good use. So, when I am there, I change it to 'vibrate' mode, especially in public places like the trains, restaurants and cinemas. My phone goes on 'silent' when in church. Contrary to what some men think, the 'vibrate' mode is not a substitute for pleasure - it doesn't deliver enough punch! The only pleasure I get out of it is that no one knows when someone is trying to reach me on my phone.

Now let's talk about cars. I love cars. Sports cars give me pleasure. Smooth and sleek bodies with power-packed engines, fully loaded and raring to go. These are my dream cars:

Dream car No. 1:

Dream car No. 2:

Most likely NOT to own any of them in this lifetime - that is why they are called 'dream cars' (it is obtainable in fantasy stories created by U. Lee, though). However, I can get back to reality and visit my friend, Anne, to take a spin in this beauty owned by her husband, Dennis:

Bolwell Mark 7
This is a limited edition with only 300 of its kind in this world. This baby does 0 to 100 km in less than 4 seconds. woo hoo! If this is too precious for Dennis to let go, maybe he will let me use this 400HP mean machine:
Mazda RX7

*sigh* ... I guess, I will just have to sleep in their garage with these 'babies':

On the far left, is Dennis' other car - a hand-built 1959 Mercedes 180D.

To Anne and Dennis, I will visit you both someday, for sure. Thanks for letting me have a peek at your cars and a promise that I can drive all of them. (sure or not?)

Dennis, wishing you a speedy recovery from your operation. This posting is dedicated to you.

JT,
I too, like you, tried as long as I could not to carry a handphone. Didn't see it as a necessity then. That was until one night when my car broke down...

And yeah, my first handphone could be used not only as a phone, but also as a weapon (if you ketuk somebody's kepala with the phone that fella sure pengsan one!).

As for the dream cars, I think I should have no problems owning them... in my dreams lah... ;)

J.T. said...

Nyonya, my phone has other features which I hardly use unless I am in Malaysia - calendar, calculator. What is the use of a calendar here? Monday - clean house, cook; Tuesday - go to gym, cook; etc, etc. :D

If by any luck la.. I ever get to own that Mercedes or Maserati, we can go for a spin. Then we stop for some apoms. hahaha

J.T. said...

Pi, all it took was our own emergencies to make us realise that having a phone is important.
Now, I cannot live without it. :)

As for those two dream cars of mine, they will remain there - in my dreams. The Mercedes' base price is USD450,000. I can do a lot more things with that money than spend on one car. :)

Hi JT, Neither me nor my sayang own a handphone. She gets lots of phone calls at work and doesn't want to see a phone nor hear one at home. Anyway, she not the chatty or gossipy kind, thank goodness!
Me? Nope...don't need one. Not the chatty kind too.
Anyway, now only one lady to sayang, nomore SYT's to chase.
I keep several quarters coins with me and in my car...if I do need to make a call, I pull over to a callbox, lots of them still around.
I don't think I even make one call a month too, on my house phone.
Re your dream cars? Wow! You sure know your cars, JT.
To think old days an MGB or Alfa Romeo, red ones of course can get lots of dates. What more driving a Maserati or Ferrari or a DB9 Aston Martin.
Its funny, with age my dream car is now an SUV. The 2007 Lincoln Navigator, a 5.7 litre engine V8. Red one of course. My Mrs loves it too. Two old fogeys, ha ha.
Here too in Toronto you see SYT's, people walking, waiting at bustops, in stores chatting on their handphones. What frightens me is a woman yakking in her car behind me, especially if her hand moves all over, or she looks like having a fight with her lover or hubby...I cepat chabut to other lane. Got a friend when he goes to the jamban, he brings his handphone to chat while doing his 'banking'. Gila fellow!
Nice pics, JT. Keep well. UL.

Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who walk around with "one, or two, or three" handphones. I move around a lot in my line of work and most of the time its to industrial areas with dodgy reception. I've learnt to carry phones on different networks to maximise the likelihood of getting reception. That's my story, anyway, and I'm sticking to it *laugh*

Anyway, I LOVE the Maserati. Have loved it before I knew how to spell it and before anyone in Malaysia had heard of it. Sigh. Come on lottery!!!

Hi U.Lee

I think most people own a phone because it is affordable these days and they do not have to look for a public phone when out and about. In Malaysia, they almost always never work, anyway. :)
Just the thought of touching a public phone in Malaysia puts me off. yucky. They smell terrible and feels slimy. ewwww
Definitely not maintained well at all! I was glad when I got my mobile device.
Here, in Germany, the public phones work well but not around when I need them! This usually happens when I am driving alone on the autobahn. So, husband prefers if I carry one. :)

As for my knowledge of cars, I know of some only, U.Lee. The ones that I don't, I ask about it. Of course it helps when someone in the house subscribes to a sports car magazine - learn a lot from there too. :D
That Lincoln Navigator you mentioned is a beautiful one. We rented one last year before leaving the States. I like the feel of it. It is a smooth ride. Also like everything electronic that comes with it. :) Have you seen the Infiniti SUV - FX models? Pretty and sleek, aren't they?

Oh yeah, talking on the phone while driving... It is hazardous not only to oneself but to others too. Even with laws requiring a driver to use a hands-free device, we still have some who just don't care. Ironically, they never get caught!

I have heard of people using their handphones in the jamban. Gila but true. haha

J.T. said...

Hello Nyna

Oh! that's why you carry multiple phones. A reasonable story to stick by. haha
Some of my friends carry two handphones because one is company-owned (and all bills paid by the company) and the other is a personal one.
One guy joked that he has two personal phones because he has to keep the girlfriend on one and the wife on the other. :)

Isn't the Maserati a beauty? Yeah, come on lottery! haha

I am very backward as far as cell phone is concern :)., no text messaging, no internet, no photo :).
My dream car is a chevy monster truck :). I wanted to get it next yr :). Ya, chevy monster truck give me security driving on highway :)-

J.T. said...

Jamy,
Did you know that there is a simplified phone in the States called Jitterbug?
They have two kinds of phone - the Dial and the OneTouch. Check it out at this website when you have the time - http://www.jitterbug.com
This plan is good for those who want to use their phone for calls only. :) We are considering it for the future.
Chevy Monster Truck: You will definitely not be bullied off the road with that thing. Security alright! haha

Hi JT, hey! Thats a lovely picture of you in your profile. Hmmm, very nice, rather exotic, should I say.
Back to driving and handphones, had several chats with the cops here and they tell me they feel sad when rush to a fatal car crash and driver crushed, his/her still clutching the h/phone tightly with voice otherside saying, "hello..hello..you there...". Then the officer has to say, "I'm sorry..but...". Otherside, "Ohhh MY GOD"!
Yes, it happens everyday.
One lady driving a brand new Mercedes S550 hardly few days old chatting on the phone on the highway at 120kmh, she drove straight under a 52 footer T/trailer, according to witnesses. Tractor trailer was going 90kph...she came from behind and went underneath while talking on her phone. She left behind 3 very young kids.
Another young lady driving her car middle of winter on icy road, young baby boy in back seat....she chatting on phone hit ice patch, lost control masuk into the frozen river beside the road. Both froze and drown.
The friend regreted making that call. Too late.
JT, put on your vibrator/voice recording and pull over to return or make any calls. Those Herrs and Herren coming up behind you in their Audis, BMW's or Mercedes at 250kmp might be chatting on their phones.
Oh ya, a lady slammed into a lamp post here. Apparently she was talking to her pooch at home via voice mail.
JT....take care, UL.

J.T. said...

Hi U.Lee
Thank you, my good sir, for the lovely compliments.

Those stories are good reminders that is not that all important to take a call while one is driving. When I telephone a person, I usually ask if it is a good time.I don't want to end up regretting like that friend who lost her pal and the baby in the frozen river.
Luckily I have a speaker phone but that too is a little distracting at times. I always try to remember (keyword: try) to use my hands-free device so that both my hands are on the wheel.

Sometimes we tend to forget that some things can wait. Thanks for those reminders. Appreciate it. You have a lovely Sunday with Mrs Lee. :)

Ok...I stopped reading at cars...Simply because I know nuts about them...But you sure have picked a thing or two from U.Lee...

But hehe, all you mentioned sounds familiar...

I have been carrying my Nokia 6260 for nearly 2 years, and surprisingly, contrary to the habits of my generation and half of my friends, I have no intention of changing it...

I guess it's a personal thing...I form very strong bonds with my items (yea, yea, I know, must not be too attached).

But then again, I took nearly a year to decide which phone I wanted, so by the time I bought it (ok, fine, dad bought it for me), it was a decision I was very sure off...

My advice to you, if I may...

Don't buy on a whim, and don't buy on impulse...

Really take your time, and choose properly...After all, like me, Im sure you're not buying to outdo your friends, so it doesnt matter if the time you take will make it an old model ;)

Trust me, you'll not regret the time you take...

My phone? I believe it is now no longer in production! Haha...*Kisses phone*

J.T. said...

Syana,
I see that your needs in a phone is the same as what I need when I am in Malaysia. (items 4 & 5 needed for appointments).

Lovely cars you mentioned there particularly the Jag (liked that one for a long, long time). Nice. :)

J.T. said...

Daphne,

I could not help but think of U.Lee when I decided to mention my dream cars. :)
Also, I did a posting on cars hoping to brighten Dennis' day (the owner of the those cars). He has been at home for weeks recuperating from an operation.

I knew that the topic on handphones will be familiar to you. We were chatting about it one day, remember?
I guess I have also grown attached to my phone too. I have been looking at phones since last September. I stopped for a while then when my brother mentioned about his phone, I went in search for an ideal one again - still cannot decide. :)

Thanks for the advice Daphne. I am definitely not going to buy one impulsively or on a whim.
In fact, the last two phones I owned were gifts from Mitch. :D
I think that is why I cannot let it go so quickly. Gifts are precious to me. :)

Thanks for dropping by, Linken. Appreciate it.

your choices of car... not my taste unfortunately.

Zewt,

I cannot remember many phone numbers now. I guess I have become very dependant on the handphone too.

As for that yanking off in public, I don't know what I will do but I will definitely not sit there and take pics of a dude 'yanking off'. oh dear.. why would I ever want to do that? I will cabut quickly.

Re choice of car.. everyone has a specific taste. That is why the car industry is so wide. One man's meat is another man's poison. I imagine you like a more exotic car. :)

Oh, Uncle Lee and I, we had a totally opposite way when it comes to our phone :P While Uncle Lee has a home phone and no handphone, we have handphones and no home phone! hahaha Since we are using a couple plan, hubby and I calling each other is free. Handphone comes in handy too esp when we go gorcery shopping. He can be at one lane picking something up and me on another lane picking something else..we sometimes call and asked, 'dear, do we need xxx?" or "yyy is on offer, do we need that?" hehehe

have a great sunday j.t :)

Winnie,

Now that sounds like hubby and me too. :)
Our handphones are important for shopping time.

The only reason why I prefer to have a home phone is because it is cheaper for my family to call me on a landline than a handphone. I make most of my overseas calls from the computer i.e. Skype

You have a great Sunday too, Winnie. :)

Hope to see you around. :)

Up till 2004, I was using a Nokia 3210- a state-of-the-art phone when it was introduced in yr 2000 and which has quickly become an ancient artifact 2 years later. I left that old junk in a cab and of all the things I've ever lost, this was the only thing ever returned to me. The cabdriver probably knew that he would get much more money in reward than profit from the sale.

Alas, I changed phone not long after that but even so, by today's std, I'm still far behind in terms of these fancy gadgets.

Gotta get me a new hp soon.

Sister dear,

The phone. Please dont be manipulated by the phone making company. I was once a victim. I bought the most expensive and latest version of the O2. Result? What a disappointment! Just by a basic phone. I still hate myself for buying the O2.

But I know Rocky wouldnt agree with me as he cant live without his fancy blackberry.

Take care sister.

And yes, I think everybody would love to drive your dream car. Yours sincerely included :-)

When everyone had a phone (in 1994), I still didn't have one. I felt I didnt need to. if i wasn't at home,I'd be at work. i was reachable.

Then, my eldest sister was dying of cancer. We needed to take turns to care for her. And also to keep in touch with each other about her condition.
I got my first - an ericsson. I knew next to nothing about cell phones. I got the ericsson because it was simple and cute and elegant. and it looked easy to use (user friendly).
My number was 010 (it was about a couple of years later that i got my 019 bcos my 010 was heavily cloned. could it have been an industry scam to make us all change to 019?)

anyway... at that time i didnt even know how to send txt messages. i dont think it was a feature in the phone yet.
the phone helped keep in touch with my siblings during my sister's illness. she later died.
then i was given a motorola which was cute but still could not send text messages.
it was the ericsson after this -- thin and sleek -- that taught me to send text messages because it was so simple to use.
that is why i am biased and partial to scandinavian products -- they are simple and user friendly.

so, JT since i got my first cell phone -- I NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT. can you ever believe this? also i have found that cell/mobile/hand phones are lifesavers -- literally!

Hi Sue

Hope you are feeling better. That's funny.. the thing that you don't mind losing, comes back to you. :)

I remember that model (Nokia 3210). It was state-of-the-art in 2000. Technology changes so fast these days - as soon as we pay for our gadget, it is almost obsolete. :D
Good luck on your next purchase.

That is one thing I won't do - be to be manipulated in to buying a phone. Thanks for the reminder.

By the way, someone here said my dream cars are unfortunately not his taste. That is ok. :) He probably has something more exotic in mind. hmm..
Of course, I am happy that you like it. Care to go for a spin in my dreams? :D

J.T. said...

Hello Nuraina

Wow.. 010 - I never knew that prefix existed. As for text messaging, I, too, am not sure when it took off. I do remember trying that feature in my phone back in 2001. I am certain it was introduced earlier than that.

It was a blessing, isn't it - to have the handphone while your sister was ill? Definitely helps with keeping in touch.

Come to think of it, if not for my cousin's handphone (in 1994), we would not have been able to contact our uncle in Singapore immediately when my dad asked for him. We were in hospital by dad's bedside. That was a Monday afternoon. He passed away on Tuesday afternoon. When my uncle got the call that afternoon, he booked for his ticket immediately. If we had waited till we got back to our house to call him, uncle would have missed his night train to get to Klang in time.

Mobile phones are life savers. A scary episode told by Syana (in her blog) recently proved it. If not for her husband's call at that specific time, I hate to think what might have happened to her. I am glad she is ok.

I believe you are correct in that assumption - those dream cars are obtainable if you become a crony somewhere some time.. haha
Just imagining the number of 'itching palms' you have to go through before you can even drive them on the road. :D
