A minute of your time, please

About a year ago (March 24th), I started blogging. I have to say it has been an exciting ride for me. Along the way, I met many wonderful people. Suddenly I don't feel alone being away from my beloved Malaysia because I meet Malaysians every day of the week through cyberspace. I have even exchanged phone numbers with them so that we can be in touch in more ways than one. I am thankful for that.

Yes, that helps but I think what John Donne (1572-1631) said seems more realistic, if you like, that "No man is an island"

Now, we are complicated creatures ruled by emotions. Some days we can handle it on our own, and other days we need a friend's shoulder. Most people are lucky to have a friend nearby to unleash their inner most thoughts over a cup of coffee. It becomes challenging when one has moved around a lot - like me. So I resort to catching someone online and if that fails, I use the phone. Maybe it was just not my day, sometime last week, or the people I tried to connect with online were busy and did not respond to my saying "hello". One of them said "what's up?". I don't know about you but that sounded like a busy response. :) I did not want to impose.

Mind you, it was past 10pm over here - I certainly wouldn't want to call anyone in the States and wake up a sleeping household. (And even if I had a friend locally, I can count a coffee session out at that hour). I could have emailed someone (and I did before ... when it was an issue I can wait on) but sometimes, I am sure you will agree with me, we need to talk to someone in real time and get immediate feedback. The only person whom I knew was awake and possibly free was my best friend in Malaysia. So, I called her and thankfully she was free and patiently listened to me.

Now I am not being dramatic about my situation (that's settled) but it brings to mind how we sometimes get caught up with our own lives and do not realise that some minutes of our time can make a huge difference to another in need. (I am guilty of it, at times). I could not help but think about an incident that someone regrets - not being there for her friend in his last hours. This lady was going about her evening routine - the usual kitchen work after dinner and then to relax in front of the TV with her favourite shows. Her phone rang at 8:00pm. Her friend, of many years, asked her if she had time to speak to him. She said that she was busy and told him that she will call him back another day. Next morning, she received news that he died of a heart attack at 11:00pm. When she shared this news with us she also added, in tears, that she regretted not giving him a few minutes of her time. She admitted that she took his friendship for granted. Now, she will never know what he wanted to share in his last hours.

Anyway, I was looking back on what I used to write early last year and found this poem, which I would like to share again:

Someday I will soar to the heavens
Above the clouds with song in my heart
Someday I will ascend to the blues
Leaving all cares, I will depart
Until then I'll remain on this earth
Journeying the road of life with sight
Until then I will walk with faith
That my path is the runaway for my flight

That was an awakening sort of blog entry, i hv been away from 'home' for about 5 years now, and i know exactly what u mean about wanting or needing someone to talk to at that particular moment. But i am glad u do hv someone that will listen at any time of day = ) Happy easter JT, the weathers rubbish here thus we r having the egg hunt indoors this year for Nora. Hugs, Mush xxx

Malaysia will always be part of me, no matter where I go. I can love it, I can get irritated with it (politics!) but it will always be my home.

Good post this.. so well expressed. Having lived in the US for a while.. regardless that I was in the Bay Area for most part(where the Indian population is quite high), I now feel that only those that leave their country and go, experience the pleasance of return.

I thought it was nice of Ms E to offer a ride from the airport although she does not need to. If/When I do make it down, I will probably need a ride from one of the KTM or LRT stations (whichever is the closest to Kak Ton's).

Happy 1 year blogging anniversary. I have found all very beautiful bloggers in this blogging world and I hope I can meet them all some day. Of coz some of them are my class mates and sister, but the rest, I want to meet at least once.

I have met some M'sians here in MN and I have to tell you it helps a lot with the homesickness thing. I can at least converse in Cantonese now so I don't feel so rusty anymore when I call my mom or my friends in Malaysia. We can still chat Manglish too!

Oh btw, I almost forgot, I tagged you, but feel free to do it.

Your writing is an inspiration to many, I for one love coming here just to read it. Hello JT, enjoyed this interesting post.
I discovered blogs in late October two years ago. Was fooling around the Net, and feeling bored popped into Malaysia's Star on line.
Somehow the word 'blog' caught my eye...and believe it or not, I didn't know then what is a blog.
Being a kaypoh as usual, I kliked in and saw the various callsigns and read thru some. Found it interesting...the rest is history.
Oh ya, at first I wondered what to blog about? After a month remembered I had brought all my old, faded diaries and notebooks from KL, and the rest you know.
But this much I must say, to be honest, apart from making so many good friends on the blog, from every corner of this planet, I never ever thought I will get to know Eurasian ladies or Malay ladies after leaving the 'olde country.
And today I know one absolutely stunning Eurasian lady, under different circumstances would make my florists hum or sing the song, 'what a wonderful world' every week, ha ha.
JT, I am glad I found 'blog', and its a real pleasure to call you my friend.

Interesting how you started blogging. I used to hear it on TV. Then I tried to see what it was all about and set up my blog account November of 2006. But I never did anything to it. I had no idea what to write about.

Then when I was in Malaysia in February 2007, I met a friend of a friend (Tony Gayondato) and he told me all about blogging and encouraged me to start. I still did not know what to write and he said "Write from your heart." OK. So the rest is history. Sometimes my heart cooperates, and sometimes it doesn't. :)

I too am glad I found you through blogging and am pleased and feel privileged to be considered your friend.

You flatter me, Lee, to the point of making me blush at times ... but keep them coming (haha) for nothing makes my day more than receiving lovely compliments from a classic gentleman like you. :)

I wish I had a network of Malaysian friends where I live. It helps! Unfortunately, wherever I went (and until today), I am always with the 'natives' of the land. The only time I met other Asians (and they were not Malaysians) were through friends. Not complaining though for it was nice to learn about other cultures.

Thanks for the anniversary wish. My year has definitely been fulfilling coupled with some lessons learned reading other blogs. One of it is that some things don't always seem as rosy as it sounds. ;)

Also, thanks for mentioning hubby and me in your last posting. I guess we have a good relationship - nothing much to complain about. :) Even if I do, I won't say it publicly. :P
I believe I am not the only one. Some bloggers do not share (as in complain .. haha) too much about their private lives because they would like to respect their partner's privacy. Everyone's made up differently - some partners don't mind (or have no clue they are being discussed publicly .. haha) while others prefer to remain out of the picture.
